Firewall LeakTesting.

Excerpts:

Leo Laporte: "So the leaktest is kind of pointless."

Steve Gibson: "Well,yes,...

Leo: "So are you saying that there's no point in doing a leaktest anymore?"

Steve: "Well, it's why I have not taken the trouble to update mine, because

you..."

Leo: "You can't test enough".

Steve: "Well, yeah.

Leo: "Right. Very interesting stuff. I guess that - my sense is, if you

can't test for leaks, a software-based firewall is kind of essentially

worthless."

Read and/or listen to the entire conversation here:

For the average homeuser, the Windows Firewall in XP does a fantastic job

at its core mission and is really all you need if you have an 'real-time'

anti-virus program, [another firewall on your router or] other edge

protection like SeconfigXP and practise safe-hex.

The windows firewall deals with inbound protection and therefore does not

give you a false sense of security. Best of all, it doesn't implement lots

of nonsense like pretending that outbound traffic needs to be monitored.

Define "properly".

I'm sure Carey is a nice guy in his own way, but I have to agree with

your "real MVP's" comment.

His hardware advice to people in the XP groups was SO BAD when XP was

first released that I badgered him for about six months using the

pseudo "Barney Fife". He had a family tragedy and left for a while

and I eventually moved on.

When I stopped back in a couple years later and found that he'd been

awarded "MVP" status, I was truly shocked.

A router and its firewall makes your computer "invisible" to

outsiders on the Internet. It won't protect you from spyware.

To test that firewall, go here and let it run all of the tests:

Vista's Windows Update updates Windows and, if you configure it, Office.

That's it. It doesn't update *anything* else. Ubuntu updates

*everything* installed from the repositories. Of course, you wouldn't

know that fact because you don't use Ubuntu. I do know what Vista

Windows Updates do and the proof is that I just explained it to you.

Once again, mr liar, mr troll uses an analogy of totally unrelated subjects.

Won't work loser.

Face it, you're stupid!

You need to read this carefully.

http://www.fiberfaq.com/admin/attachments/actiontec_mi424wr_manual.pdf

Frankly, I'm having a difficult time reconciling certain parts of that

manual with others. My sense is that the router comes with the firewall

enabled for certain basic protocols and not for others. Regardless, there

are plenty of places in the router's configuration pages for you to check to

see if your firewall is operating. The way they talk about it, my guess is

that it's enabled by default. But like I said, there are too many seeming

contradictions in the manual for me to say. Easiest thing is to ask Verizon

tech support. They can walk you through making sure your router is properly

configured for your use. But first, you have to decide which of the

classifications listed here is yours.

Well, Carey, the thing is that I just have to *presume* that anything from

Microsoft that's shilled by you is not going to top the list compared to

most other products in its class (spitting on McAfee and Norton first, of

course.) I presume that anything not heavily pushed by REAL MVPs is probably

a POS. But you're right, I haven't tried the latest version, nor am I likely

to do so any time soon. Certainly not on your recommendation -- which is, by

the way, the main point you missed: It's YOU I consider totally

untrustworthy and your opinions therefore not worth noting. (That's based

upon YEARS of knowledge about you and your super-sycophantic ways, you

weasel.)

I did try OneCare a while back, and it was just as someone else pointed out:

A pile of bloatware intended to compete with Norton, TM, McAfee, etc. Pure

disaster. All I could comment was that they'd at least succeeded in

competing evenly with all the big, bad bloatware offerings.

You want me to even consider trying that pile of loserware again you'll have

to come up with a recommendation (or rather, a list of such) from much more

trustworthy sources than your own vacuous being.

I agree the package manager in Ubuntu is superior to the way Windows

manages programs and updates. It has some problems but for the most part

it's better than what's available in Windows. If you care to check the

headers of this post you'll see I use Linux as well. I know it's good

points and it's bad points.

None if this is to the point of the original question. It also doesn't

address the fact that you continually post "Switch to Linux" as a

solution to almost every question asked on this newsgroup. Linux has many

good points and for some people is a viable alternative to Windows. Your

simplistic posts don't do anybody any service though. If you want people

to switch to Linux you should point out how Linux would solve their

particular problem, not just tell them to switch to Linux.

I briefly glanced at that a couple hours ago, and it looked so generic

(all models covered) that I passed.

I'll go back and get it.

Thanks.

Though you will of course not be capable of researching it yourself, I can

guarantee you that blacksmiths did not go out in a "few years" after the

automobile made its debut. It took decades. In fact, there are still a

sizeable number of people using blacksmiths (or, to be more accurate,

horseshoers or farriers) to this very day, especially in some of the

wealthiest provinces.

Wrong! Vista updates other non-Windows, non-Office components as well.

Network adapters, video drivers, etc.

But you don't have nor use Vista so you don't know.

Ubuntu updates

I used that POS toy os for about 2 wks, then I nuked it. It's was

worthless. But for a broke loser like you, I suppose it's just fine.

I do know what Vista

> Windows Updates do and the proof is that I just explained it to you.

No, you either lied (proly) or you're simple too stupid to know cause

you don't have Vista and you've never used Vista.

You're just an uneducated, ignorant, stupid lying linux troll.

Got it. I did all of that when I first got the thing a couple months

ago - I'd forgotten about it. Firewall settings: I stayed with the

defaults.

I don't quite see how you could call that web page or the User Guide at all

"generic", except that it's just called "User Guide", which I agree is quite

generic, <s>. Quite the contrary, they seem quite specific, though personal

experience with LinkSys says that while it's "complete", it's likely to

leave you with more questions than answers.
