Heh, good snark & good points there, OzBlue. But you're using way too much

Reality check:

Linux had the same DNS BIND updates.

Another reality check:

PA Bear helps more people on these forums in one day than you do in a year.

Uninstall Zone Alarm. Enable Windows firewall. This security date is

very important and everyone -- even Linux users -- need it.

MSFT did not ask you to install this software. It was your decision, so

bear the consequences if the software manufacturer provides with broken

applications.

Nobody gives a hoot. In this newsgroup you're communicating with volunteer

contributors and not MSFT employees.

No good points whatsoever, a completely inappropriate post! Get your facts

straight before mouthing off, that's I'd call common sense!

--

Security is a process not a product.

(Bruce Schneier)

You're certainly welcome to refute his points, Kayman. I think intelligent

answers to the posited notions would be most helpful.

For example, where OzBlue notes:

"Your flippant attitude forgets

> >> end-user choice from paying customers that choose to pay for third party

> >> fixing software to plug the operating system's holes. "

Setting aside the "flippant attitude" remark, what is incorrect about his

assertion that the holes and flaws of the product have to addressed by using

3rd party softwares?

That's tantamount to General Motor customers needing to go to a Volkswagen

repair shop to get parts to keep their Chevy in working order.

As I said, I'd be more than interested if -anyone- could give a well thought

out, point by point refutation of the issues OzBlue raised. Personal attacks

and just shouting "no good points!" do not constitute an intelligent response

to an (rightly) upset customer-base..

Thank you for that suggestion, R. But I honestly do not know anyone who uses

or depends on Wins Firewall for security. I'm no different.

As with all fixes that aren't quite ready for primetime, this will be

handled either by MS or ZoneAlarm shortly. Though I do believe MS should do

some real world "field testing" before it releases a fix so it could give a

heads up re: conflicts with popular softwares. Makes good business sense and

good customer PR.

But "this too shall pass", as they say.

ZONEALARM BLOCKS INTERNET BROWSER ACCESS WITH KB951748

After updating from XP patch KB951748 ZoneAlarm can no longer interpret the

difference between programs trying to access the internet.

This causes all DNS packets to be blocked.

TEMPORARY SOLUTION

The only solution is to lower Internet Zone Security to Medium in the

Firewall options tab or disabling the Firewall.

LONG TERM SOLUTION

Uninstall KB951748, do a system restore to 2008-07-07 or wait for another

update from Microsoft or Zone Labs ZoneAlarm.

Kind Regards Ken

Same problem! I've just uninstalled the update and now it works fine.

Running XP Pro with ZoneAlarm Pro

This is a real pain as I maintain several PCs all with Zone Alarm on.

Presumably there's a good reason for the update, so I've removed ZoneAlarm

until there is a fix. Given that no other firewall software seems to be

affected it looks like a ZoneAlarm issue? Anyone know of issues with other

software firewalls? Removing ZoneAlarm was not completely straight forward as

the ZoneAlarm uninstaller leaves the Spyware blocker behind so you have to

remove that seperately using add / remove programs. Happy days!

Everything works fine if you disable or uninstall ZA and enable the Windows

Firewall...or if you install a firewall that works better with Windows

(e.g., Online Armor). Seems to me then that ZA is the problem.

I can assure you that ZA had the opportunity to test KB951748 before it was

released. Ask ZA why they didn't.

The problem is with Zone Alarm. They are aware of the issue, and are working

on it:

http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/board/message?board.id=cfg&thread.id=52785

For ZA Free, there are two possible fixes: uninstall KB951748, or reset your

internet security level to Medium in ZA. Neither is ideal. Uninstalling the

update is preferable, but only just.

For those using ZA Pro, here's a suggested solution. IDK if it works, since

I'm running ZA Free, but it's worth a try:

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r20762892-

For the rest of us, you can always try Comodo Firewall instead:

http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html

Comodo is not tweaking over the expanded range of ports this update appears

to implement.

For those folks suggesting you drop ZA and all other 3rd-party firewalls and

rely on the Windows firewall, I suggest *you* go right ahead. Then call me to

fix your computer when you get overrun by malware. Be sure to tell me how

proud you are to have ditched those evil 3rd-party firewalls for the Windows

Crayola version, so I can charge you extra for stupidity.

I had the same exact problem. I found KB951748 to prevent me from accessing

the internet. I use ZA, and do not plan on changing that anytime soon.

Microsoft better come up with a fix for this issue.

Whatever you do don't listen to this GUY!. I've been a security

professional for over 2 decades. The professional security companies are

much better at what they do than the default "for free" security you get with

windows. Verify this by checking any number of industry magazines and/or

professional forums. The inbuilt firewall and such is worth exactly what you

paid for it. If you follow his advice do so at your own peril, you've at

least been warned.

Said before in other threads, but do not trust the free windows firewall and

antispyware. If there's anything in the industry that's not worth what you

pay for it's these "free" products.

ZA recommends uninstalling the update until the issue is resolved. You can

also reduce ZA's protection level to MEDIUM and restore the connection, if

you're comfortable with that.

The update seemed to mess with my wife connecting to her workplace, too.

I was also unable to use my internet connection after applying this update to

Windows XP media center edition (SP3) which is using Zone Alarm Security

Suite. After I uninstalled it everything is fine. This is why I do not

allow automatic updates.

Why do you run third-party applications that aren't compatilble with your

fully-patched version of Windows?
