Because that's their business model - and so far it seems to work.....

Lol. Are you listening to their customers? It "works"

because of the monopoly context. That's like saying "DeBeers diamond

pricing works.".

That was pretty much exactly my point. You using Safe mode to tamper with

the default system is hacking the system. It's not much different than

nLite/vLite there. Clearly XP did not provide a meaningful solution to you,

and the system has never been designed to be resilient to what you're doing.

Interestingly the system is much better designed now and that form of

resiliency is improving. This is a user win. Your particular Hack The

Planet scenario was never meant to be well addressed and has never been well

addressed... outside of Windows Embedded. =)

We're on the same page. It's an interesting feature request, the right

people are aware of it, and I guarantee that those people right now have

other things that you want them focused on for now. =)

Respectfully yours,

There are probably better ways to more meaningfully simplify the matrices,

and the right people are looking into that. Having the 'core' OS be

meaningfully useful out of box is actually kind of a huge user win. Never

underestimate the complete and utter befuddlement my computer-trained(!)

parents face when dealing with modern technology. They're a great case in

point for why things need to Just Work and kind of the reason for my

technology passions.

Anyways, your alternative suggestion has already been implemented as Windows

Embedded. That addresses that key market space without compromising the

ability to provide a user an operating system that out of box meets the

fundamental user needs. (Arguably you could expand or shrink that

definition, but that's the net goal.)

Respecfully,

-Zach
