Big problem with Vista seems to be USB instability issues. A lot of people

report random stops of USB peripherals, problems with drivers etc. I too

suffer badly from the problem. ANd yes, I have all the BIOS updates, driver

updates and hotfixes I can find. Definitely an insoluble problem and

microsoft just don't seem to have answers. On the other hand, there are

people who have no USB problems.

XP is zero-risk option. Vista is a risky option. What is the upside of the

Vista risk? Answer- very little. You get a flashy and IMO ugly graphical

interface, and a load of annoying security features which you don't need

unless you don't have virus software and you browse seedy porno sites.

If I had hardware/software that may not work with Vista, I'd select

XP. If my new PC had under 2GB RAM I'd get XP. And, I may choose XP

over Vista if I were getting a laptop, since laptops usually have

scaled-down resources and slower CPU.

That was the most honest we have seen Ballmer. Still in denial though.

Most of his customers want XP and not Vista. But if you go to the local

Best Buy store, you have 3 choices that come with a MS-Windows PC, Vista,

Vista or Vista. Under home users at the Dell web site, Vista, Vista or

Vista.

But at least calling Vista "a work in progress" is more accurate. Kudos for

that.

Scary though, he wants to release more often, yet I suspect business wants

the opposite. Ballmer needs to realize we want OSes like cars. Would you

by a car where in 3 years it is obsolete and you can't get decent service

and parts? That question needs to be addressed.

It also has to be havoc inside of MS too. Most developers have likely

shifted to Win7 leaving Vista in maintenance mode like XP. Maintenance mode

is bug fix only, if the flaws are design they are deferred.

WPA and WGA are attempts, admittedly sometimes futile, by Microsoft to help

prevent a good boy from going bad. It's the same logic behind the jewelry

store that locks its door at night.

If someone is determined to be a thief, a locked door won't stop them. But

for those temporarily tempted to ignore the laws of God and man, a modest

obstacle may prevent them from burning in Hell for all eternity.

It's for the children.

When you have to pass WPA and then WGA, you are proving to MS that you

aren't a pirate. It is assumed that you ARE a pirate until you prove

otherwise. Period. If MS wants to know if I bought my copy of XP or

whatever, they can get a court order to come and demand to see my

receipt. There is NO reason for MS to force paying customers to help MS

catch pirates. That is the job of the legal authorities, not for paying

customers of MS software. This is the main reason I checked out and use

Ubuntu.

So keep the old uneconomical printer and the low resolution scanner if they

work for you..

One has the option of ordering more RAM..

Yes, laptops are slower but if reasonably specified, they work well enough.

A laptop is bought for portability over performance anyway..

Translation: Frank just nailed your lying thieving ass once again...LOL!

Frank

That sounds similar to what I was planning, other than my plan is AMD Dual

Core 5000 & a GeForce graphics card. What with the dollar/pound rate

changing I can't really compare prices but mine works out c£200 (without

operating system [since, as you may have guessed from the original post, I've

not decided yet] & monitor [as I have a spare already].

Having read how people have had USB issues with Vista, I'm leaning towards

XP. My modem is USB so if it's not recognised, I wouldn't even be able to

get online to check for patches/updates... At least with XP I know it works

so I may go for XP again & wait for the next Windows (Windows v11 if my maths

is correct?) and dither some more when that comes out...

Thank you all for all your assistance,

Matt

So, according to your "logic", all these corporate and government

Microsoft Office users are thieves:

http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9079058&intsrc=hm_list

I don't think so, Fido. The ONLY thing that WPA, WGA and OFA do is

inconvenience paying customers and do NOTHING to stop piracy. The fact

that you're willing to bend over and take it up the ass doesn't mean

that what I say isn't true.

What is it about "false warnings" that you don't understand, Mr Logic

Considering I don't steal, catching me doing something I don't do isn't

possible except, of course, in your twisted mind.
