But make sure all the parts he buys are compatible with XP and Linux, which

they probably are.

All I can add is that I've used XP and Vista on this same system, a

fully loaded Dell M1730, and for some reason Vista does everything twice

as fast--even reading large data files. I'm kind of puzzled by this, but

there it is.

I think Vista is less stable than XP, but XP was less stable than

Windows 2k for the first year or three it was out. So I imagine this

will be about the same.

Microsoft doesn't see us as "customers", but "consumers". And so they

just put stuff out there to be "consumed" and try to rig the market such

that mass consumption (and therefore profit) will be forced. This kind

of mentality leads to incredibly buggy software being produced and

forced on the consumers, but once released, Microsoft is also forced

into the position of supporting that software.

That is until they come out with Windows Astro, Theta, or some odd

thing.

Your best bet then is to make sure the hardware you buy works with Vista,

XP, Linux and anything else you might want to run. Even if you don't plan

to say run Linux, the popularity of such devices usually makes for better

drivers and better long term support. There is no sense in closing your

options.

You might want to read this like:

http://thesims2.ea.com/help/detail.php?help_id=281

Also use http://google.com and search for "sims 2 vista".

It does look you can get Sims2 on Vista, but given it needs a DirectX 9 card

it makes for a strange performance mismatch with Vista. Vista likes DirectX

10 and more powerful cards.

Forget about XP...it's yesterday's OS.

The op sounds smart enough (unlike you) to run Vista.

<2GB ?? I would think he would want at least 2gb. And he indicated he'd be

building the system. I think you're right that the chances of significant

difficulties are reduced by buying pre-installed.

Not really true...the "crap" software the oem's install is proly the

biggest problem new Vista users are having.

We build all of ours and don't have any compatibility, stability or

usability problems.

It's always best investigate and know what you need.

I think he got his less than/greater than mixed up. IMO, 2 GB is the

minimum RAM you want for Vista, and more will absolutely improve performance

as Vista will cache more stuff with more RAM. Unlike XP where after 1 GB

or so no more performance gains will be seen, because XP doesn't use RAM to

advantage the way Vista does.

That's not to say that Vista won't run with less than 2 GB. I have an old

ThinkPad T41 laptop with 1 GB, and Vista runs fine on it.

Agreed. BTW, 25+ years, not 30+.

Sorry about the Shell/User jab. Just I get a kick out of seeing it.

Ray,

I would have to agree with you.

Less than 2GB of RAM for 32 bit Vista is like putting a lawn mower Briggs

and Staten in a Semi.

You could argue many users needed more. More RAM.

Me, I run VMs, pull up 2 Solaris, a XP, and a Linux --

Apache/Tomcat/MySQL -- 3GB seems small.

Don't you think (well, imagine for you, see as thinking is kind of out

of the picture) that it's rather curious that most Vista users don't

have the slow file transfer problem that you keep harping about?

We've got multiple installs of Vista Ultimate x32 & x64 and we haven't

seen it on any of them. I personally experienced it on one of the early

5k series beta builds, but never one any of our RTM's.

Then again, your open hatred Of MS lends nothing at all to your

creditability.

Your case?

You think anyone actually believes any or your MS hate filled rants...LOL!

You're not that important, sorry. You're just a big mouth whining loser.

I'm bored and you're an easy target.

You like it that way, or so it seems...and I'm having fun...LOL!

Matt,

Vista has been rock solid on a number of PC's here. (Mostly Dell's and

one Mac.) That's not to say it's rock solid on all PC's... drivers

surely can have an effect on one's Vista experience.

Vista's advantages over XP, imho, are better memory management, better

security (Perfect? No. Better than XP? Yes.), offloading a bunch of

video tasks from the CPU and putting them where they belong... on the

video sub-system.

XP's advantages over Vista? Well... they moved a lot of cheese in Vista.

If you're uncomfortable or unwilling to learn where they moved stuff,

then XP wins out because you're already familiar with it. (It's not that

hard to find stuff in Vista though... the search functionality is better

than XP's, I think.)

I can't speak to the Sims2 issue... one assumes if EA says it'll run on

Vista, it'll run on Vista. Also can't speak to the OpenOffice issue...

tried it a couple years ago and, well, whatever... I don't use it.

Ultimately, it's your choice. If you're interested in giving Vista a

shot, then do your homework and ensure that all the hw you're going to

use to build your system works with Vista. Read other NG's and check

forums on vendor sites.

If you don't care to commit to that level of due diligence... then stick

with XP.

Guess I'll close with this: if you do try Vista and you have hw issues

on your byopc box, hw can be returned fairly easily. (Compared to

returning -any- software.) Other hw can be road tested.

Again, only if you feel like dealing with it.

In any case, good luck!

I have 4GB RAM and shed loads of Vista problems. Vista really sucks. The OP

definitely should get XP.

Speaking of the Monkey Man, here's what he says about your precious Vista:
