I have an up to date antivirus. Never get viruses. Oops.

Wrong. You can't get any work done because you are here promoting Ubuntu

Again, you have comprehension problems. Typical for Ubuntu users because

they are too STUPID to retain any information. I have NOT had problems

installing Ubuntu. Ubuntu just is a piece of crap because it doesn't run

any worthwile software. Oops.

Wrong. If the product was FREE and GOOD, EVERYBODY would be RUNNING to it.

Marketshare for Ubuntu is so small it's just a blip on the radar. Oh yea,

must be a great product if NOBODY wants it. Those are the FACTS. You just

can't comprehend becasue you are STUPID and you use UBUNTU. Goes hand in

hand. Just FYI

So you have to run some dumb emulator in Ubuntu to run a Windows app. Why

bother. Ubuntu is crap and it's only for idiots who can't figure out how to

use a real computer, and for geeks and teenagers who can't get a date.

Or for Alias who can't find reality.

Only recently has Linux become user friendly and a lot of people are

installing it as well as many companies. You don't get out much, do you?

Actually, I called this guy that I know who works for Google and asked him

The upgrade advisor is for software too. Run it on your current computer

with the software you intend to use in Vista and the upgrade advisor will

tell you which titles will be problematic. With the number of software

titles that are out there it is possible that something might be missed, but

by and large the advisor does a good job. At least it did for me. The

advisor produced a list of 13 problematic software titles, including a

description of the problem and remedies where applicable. Two or three

titles were just plain incompatible with Vista, some others would work but

required removal if upgrading from XP to Vista, then reinstall the program

in Vista, and some others would need to be run in compatibility mode or with

administrator level privileges.

The age of the software doesn't really matter, it's more a question of how

the software interacts with Windows (including installation) and in

particular Vista's new security features. I opted to dual boot Vista with XP

and installed everything I normally use as clean install on Vista, including

OpenOffice and Opera. Haven't made time for games lately so didn't install

any. Four months running with Vista and I almost never boot into the XP

partition on my c.2005 P4 system. Two hardware manufacturers opted to not

write Vista compatible drivers for some add-on devices that I own.. a

scanner that fortunately will run using its XP drivers but 3 devices from

Creative that the company conveniently declared 'end of life'. Everything

else has Vista drivers and works, though the sound device maker has been

updating their own drivers every few weeks. I'm running with only 1GB RAM

but I'd recommend installing 2 or 3 Gigs if you do go with Vista.

Frank is the one obsessed with sheep. Here's proof:

Well I thought Vista would be the 'Bees Knees' buts its exactly the

opposite particularly when it comes to wanting to use anything with a

USB attached to it. It would seem Microsoft have not got their act

together on this one.

You are continually asked to find a driver for this and that wheras XP

would either not require a driver or you could be assured of finding one

on the net. It seems to me that many hardware manufacturers are hanging

on and waiting until everyone has Vista before they seriously start to

write new drivers for their kit. Vista Ultimate is not very 'User

Friendly' at all in my opinion and takes a lot of getting used to. The

graphics are better but that's about it as far as I can see but I am not

an expert so can only give a view based on my experience to date.

I am seriously thinking about downgrading, unbelievably I happened to

stumble across a section on the Asus Motherboard site about how to

downgrade to XP as I was looking at upgrading my BIOS (Trying to solve

my biggest problem of Vista not recognising my External hard drive but

thats another story) which makes me think there are real serious issues

with Vista that are not being sorted out fast enough and leading many to

think about downgrading.

It sounds as though there is nothing in vista you 'need'. Particularly for

a home grown system, I'd recommend you stay away from vista - it may work

flawlessly for you, or it may not. It's difficult to ascertain before

hand, and can be a real bitch if you made the wrong decision.

Then the answer (IMO) would have to be Vista. There are complaints out

there, but my experience has been only good. I have Vista on 2 machines

here. I also maintain a few XP machines, but they are only for backward

compatibility when necessary, and I use them for specific purposes. I run

Vista on my productivity machines and couldn't be happier. Very reliable and

never have any trouble. I've been running Vista full timesincer about 2

months before it's release.

That said, I build my own machines and always use high end parts, so Vista

is happy. I think it worthwhile. Unless you have older programs and cannot

afford the updates (and Vista healthy hardware), there's no reason *not* to

go with Vista.

If he buys it pre-installed with sufficient RAM (<2GB) then there's no

reason to suppose he'll have any problems...

I'm not having any USB problems at all with Vista. Also an Asus made board

but an HP OEM. Did you install the Vista chipset drivers for your

motherboard? I also have a USB harddrive. When it is turned on during boot

neither XP nor Vista can properly initialize the port that it is connected

to. Not an OS problem, probably the electronics in the drive itself since

nothing else is similarly affected and it happens on any port the driver is

connected to. Both OS's will install an Unknown device in that situation.

There's no problem at all with the drive if it is powered on after either OS

has booted up.

You can also run into trouble with your USB devices if you connect multiple

high powered or high bandwidth devices through the same hub/port. For

instance you can't expect to operate both a webcam and a USB ADSL modem on

the same hub, or a USB powered scanner, or USB WIFI. Each device can consume

all of the available power on its own and some of the devices can

individually consume all of the available bandwidth. Some USB cables are

not rated for USB2, which can cause problems. USB2 devices won't work to

spec when connected through a USB1.1 hub or port. Corrupt driver

installations can be a cause of continual driver installation problems

unless the driver is completely uninstalled and then cleanly reinstalled,

with appropriate reboots between stages and possibly the AV software

disabled while installing.

I have been using Windows OS's since the early 90's. Taking simple

precautions, I've never had any problems whatsoever. You say you don't have

to take precautions with Linux? Perhaps. But if Linux were ever to become

mainstream, it would be a different story. You say Linux has a different

architecture that is not prone to those type of attacks? Again, if Linux

were to become mainstream, attacks would be developed that *would* penetrate

and impact Linux.

Linux has its beneifts, and there is a place for it. Perhaps it will take

over the world one day and make the world a better place. Perhaps you will

be instrumental in that process. That certainly seems to be your goal, based

on your posting history. But the reality is that, while Linux is certainly

worthy of anyone's consideration, it just can't offer everything that

Windows does.

I'm all for competition. It can only be good for all of us. And an open

source OS that can be changed to suit a given user at code level (provided

he has the know how) is definitely a good, good thing.

It's a good OS, it works for you and it may take over the world. You promote

it as such. All good. Your only mistake is in believing that Windows has no

value and that everyone should be using Linux. Yes, it may take over the

world one day, but that day is not today, nor, by all appearances, any day

soon.

Windows Vista USB support is fine. In over a year of use, I've yet to

locate even one USB device that didn't work on my Windows Vista Ultimate

x64.

Not so. Even XP required drivers for devices. The misconception of "XP

not requiring drivers" exists because the drivers existed within the XP

database. User plugged a device in, and presto, it worked. However, the

"generic" drivers where just that, generic, and their associated devices

often didn't work to their maximum potential until drivers wher

downloaded from the manufacturer website.

This holds true for Vista also.

It is, however, not the responsibility of Microsoft to provide drivers

as a part of Windows. If a manufacturer missed the deadline for driver

submission, it was simply not included as part of Vista.

If all you think is that the UI is better, then you haven't really dug

in yet and truly explored the newer and more advanced features of Vista.

If you are having a problem with your external hard drive, why are you

looking to the motherboard manufacturer for BIOS updates? Unless, of

course, you have a problem with the USB ports themselves. What you could

do is try to connect the external hard disk to the rear-connector USB

ports of the motherboard, as the extension ports (usualy in front or on

top of the chassis) don't always work with anything that requires power.

If you want stability and performance, XP is your best bet.

Vista offers nothing tangible other than the Aero/Glass interface, but it

wears off fast. My Vista experience was mostly centered around performance

issues. But I also had issues I never had with XP.

It is unlikely you will miss anything Vista, Microsoft is already focusing

on Win7 to replace it. This means Vista is already out of active

development and into bug fix mode. Vista will be like WinMe. Many people

happy with Win98 just skipped WinMe and didn't miss a thing.

I have done this on my laptop. XP, unlike Vista seems much better at

co-existing with other OSes even if it the OEM versions. That is, I load XP

OEM, then load Linux and grub can boot either.

From what I gather, Vista OEM (any version) you are SOL in trying this.

Makes me wonder if MS goes out of it's way to make Linux hard to use.

I would suggest his brain is dynamically large enough and open mined enough

to try and like Ubuntu.

MS-Vista sells as many copies as they do ONLY for the following reasons:

- average home purchases have no choice, it comes with Vista, Vista or

Vista.

- the practice is called bundling.

- your average person is intimidated to do OS installs.

- vendors say no, even though other OSes (including XP) run just fine on

it.

Case in point. I have yet to see a commodity PC that comes with Vista at

Best Buy that you cannot get XP drivers for. Sales people often say stupid

stuff towing the MS-FUD line. Vendors don't want the support calls. That

is the real reason. And the result is people don't get a choice because of

WeSaySo corporation.

What really surprised me when I did my most recent research on the system,

is that I could find Linux drivers for everything on my Q6600 based

purchase. In fact, they are already in the distributions so no loading them

was required. But if I did XP, I would have to download 3 of them.
