Hi,

I'm after informed opinions if possible...

I'm going to be building a new pc soon. The supplier has copies of XP in

stock so I was going to get one (since I have used XP for several years

without major issues) but I am wondering about Vista.

The computer will be used for web browsing, home office & some games.

Is there any advantage to Vista over XP (other than continued support)? I

have tried looking at the product descriptions but have not seen anything to

swing the decision. Since all I am wanting is an operating system that lets

me use the software etc I currently have, should I buy another copy of the XP

I am familiar with or (the untried by me) Vista?

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Matt

Well if you want to continue using the software you already have it is

almost certain to mean XP. Have you tried the free update compatibility page

which should give you more info?

What software do you currently have? If you have some older applications

then XP may be the way to go.

Get XP.

Vista has no significant advantages and loads of disadvabtages.

Vista is just not ready for the market. I am going to have to reinstall XP

on my Vista machine as Vista is so unstable (paarticularly USB ports) and

incompatible with so much usefiul software and hardware.

I still use both on different PCs and in fact, both on one PC.

Make sure you have 2G RAM in your new PC and go for Vista. It's more secure

and, once you get used to it, better to use.

Regards

If I were you, I would do a dual boot of XP and Ubuntu. I would stay

away from Vista. Check out Ubuntu at http://www.ubuntu.com/. It's free.

Hi

I haven't tried the compatibility too, thought that was just for hardware &

I haven't bought that yet?

The main applications that are to be run are not that old, all purchased in

the last 18 months (since I bought current PC). The main one that a new pc

HAS to run (to avoid me getting too much grief at home!) is the Sims2 (which

the EA site says is Vista compatible). Other than that, OpenOffice & web

browser are the only "must have's".

I've seen reviews of Vista which make reference to various features but all

I'm after is a stable operating system so it sounds like XP might be the best

bet?

Thanks,

Matt

If you are truly building your own computer, i.e., buying all of the

needed hardware components and installing them yourself, I say install

Vista Ultimate X64 and never look back.

Download the Vista Upgrade Advisor from this website.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradeadvisor.mspx

Read what it says about compatibility with any of your software and

hardware such as scanners, printers etc..

Then go to software author, and hardware manufacturer websites to confirm

whether or not there are Vista issues and subsequent fixes for them.

If all proves to be OK, go for Vista...

I guess you didn't read the original post. Figures from someone who uses

Ubuntu. He wants either Vista or XP. NOWHERE did he mention that pile

Ubuntu. Ubuntu is for geeks who can't get dates or who just want to tinker

around with an OS that doesn't do much.

Better staying away from Ubuntu.

False, and a lame try at FUD.

Better stay away from Windows unless, of course, you like to be accused

of being a pirate over and over again and if you enjoy having an

operating system that is prone to viruses and malware.

Hi Matt,

One thing to consider regarding "some games". If the games eventually

support DX10, and you are planning on purchasing one, Vista may be your

only solution.

Nobody accuses me of being a pirate. I install virus software, it updates

automatically and I never have a problem. I don't visit those seedy sites

like you do.

I actually get work done, not like you, the Ubuntu Marketing Department

trying to get people to switch to the piece of crap OS that is FREE and

NOBODY wants.

Gotta be something special if NOBODY wants a FREE product!

That has got to be the most idiotic serious post I've ever seen on

here.

Based on what he said what makes you think Vista x64 is the way to go?

Are you trying to insure that he will have problems with "the software

etc I currently have"?

You're really one sad POS for human being. I almost feel sorry for your

Almost...hahaha...but not quite...LOL!

Not true. About 4/5ths of one percent of installed operating systems are

Linux. Presumably, 20% of that comprises the Ubuntu incantation. That means

that two-tenths of one percent use Ubuntu, or about 40,000 Ubuntu computers

world-wide. Curiously, this is about the same number of people afflicted

with Chastic Fibrosis, a disease usually found in foxes. Not sure about the

overlap.

By comparison, there are about 100,000 Commodore-64 boxes still in use.

Just read how he resorts to insulting others family members. He is a

lose.

From the mouth of alias, the POS loser:

"Your wife asked me if I would stroke her but I declined as I don't do

dogs. Then she screamed that I am a Linux loving commie atheist loser

and went running out into the street naked repeating that over and over

Have you stopped fuçking your daughter yet ... LOL!

Trust me when I say this is one really sick piece of sh*t as*hole loser.

As of yet, I've not bought the new hardware. I'm more after finding out

whether Vista is any better (sorry for such a vague term) than XP. I only

know one person who has used it & they weren't impressed (to the point of

reverting back to XP) but I know that's maybe not representative of the wider

views.

The MS Vista product page makes reference to various "features" but, since

it is an operating system I am buying, these aren't really a selling point

to me.

I have ubuntu installed on one of my old pc's but it's not really suitable

for the one I am planning since, as I mentioned before, this one must be able

to run the Sims2 (and possibly Sims3 when that comes out) otherwise the

amount of trouble I'll get at home would be unbearable. That's why the

choice for this pc is between XP & Vista.

Thanks,

Matt

With Windows, of course you don't because you know how prone Windows is

to drive by virus attacks.

I get a lot of work done. How would you know what I do or don't do?

False. Nobody like YOU wants it because YOU are too STUPID to install it.

The above quotes -- if you were to read them -- are address to a lot

more people than yours truly. What technical knowledge? Frank has

*never* offered any technical advice.
