I bought a new Gateway Laptop with Vista Home Premium already loaded. If I

had a choice, I would never have Vista on this computer and if there was

anyway to get it off and back to Windows XP Home Addition, I would if it

didn't cost me an arm and leg. I am a novice and Vista appears to be for

computer guru's. also I can't even fax from this program.

I have written to Gateway suggesting they give you a choice.

The largest school system in my state will not load Vista on our computers

and I understand why.

Any suggestions how to fax from this OS since it was included in XP.

Windows Fax and Scan is only found in the Vista Business

and Ultimate editions, not in Vista Home Premium.

Consider purchasing a dedicated fax program such as Snappy Fax:

Though Vista might still have a few bugs left...

and though you may have to use a 3rd party fax program...

Vista is certainly no more complicated to use than XP.

Other than having a few additional features that you may or may not like...

the gui looks and operates the same way as XP

Genie,

Others suggest you buy add on packages for fax, this may or may not be the

way to go.

$69 for a fax program seems like a lot. Plus relearning and installing.

Especially if you have to do this for say 3-4 programs like this.

A better route _might_ be to consider a downgrade in the OS to XP. Most

local PC stores should be selling XP Home OEM for about $100. If you have

to upgrade 2 programs @ $69 then XP downgrade may be better and less

expensive as you also get the better performance and familiarity of XP.

If you need drivers say for a sound card, you can go to the vendors site and

download/install them for free.

Your assertion that Vista is for those that must have MS-NextToy is correct.

XP is a better system for a production - business critical use. That is

also why business adoption of Vista is near zero. And it is likely business

is going to skip Vista altogether like it did with WinMe.

Really? I can right click on the desktop and get into my display

properties right away?

Nope, now you are sent to a local web page and have to read it to find

out where you can change your display props.

So with XP I get into display properties much faster on a 6 year old

computer, than I can with vista on a brand spanking new computer.

Gotta love that change for the sake of change Vista crap.

Depends on a few factors.

If one spends the time and customizes it. It is quite different out of the

box. If for say they were used to classic, they would need to change it

back to classic. There is also the issue that stuff seems to have moved

around quite a bit. There is a learning curve in there.

As for features, the only one I can think of is gadgets. But really not a

big deal. Glass/aero gets dry after the flash and awe wears off, which was

pretty quick for me. It is XP but has put on 500 pounds.

The only point is that someone is clueless. Both XP and Vista take 3

clicks from the desktop to get to the display properties "right away".

Can you elaborate? As a retired Systems Accountant I find NO DIFFERENCE in

"productivity" between XP and Vista. Users just use Office in both OS's -

it's NOT the Users's job to mess with the OS.

As a Systems Accountant again, Vista has been out for just over a year. Many

large corporations are now upgrading machines on a four year cycle as

ME was not an NT-based OS - businesses went straight from W98 to Windows

2000. That's why it was skipped. The fact that it was an awful OS is nothing

to do with it...

Right Click on Desktop. Left click on Properties. Boom I'm into my

display properties in XP.

2 Clicks in XP, and you don't have to read a localized Personalize web

page first.

It seems that it is you that is clueless, Booby.

"Produkt-Aktivierung macht frei!"

the OS system just seems more complicated and you have to search for

everything.

On XP you can download the simply version of PhoneTools, but that is not

even compatible with Vista. From reading some of the other comments,

SnappyFax is not a very good program. Also, why would Microsoft supply a

fax/scan for businesses or the more expensive programs and not for the

everyday home owner?

Also, you overlook the key word in my original email. the word is "Novice".

I use a computer everyday in my job, but the programs are already on the

computer. And I have no problem at all. But I don't have to try to figure

out which one is best and get a lot of extra stuff that in home use I don't

need. XP supplied everything I needed without all the frills.

Now Microsoft wants us to pay for things that was part of the XP program and

figure out what we need.

Well that was their own look-out then. They certainly didn't have to, and if

they did, they either didn't do their homework properly, or their IT

Yes...the first thing I did when I was testing Vista was turn the GUI right

back to Windows classic

and set the system for best performance.

Genie,

If Gateway has XP drivers for your laptop, it should be a simple matter to

install XP on it. I checked the support web pages for my Dell laptop, and

it is all there for "downgrading" to XP, except for a copy of XP itself,

which I already have. It also appears that Dell at least still gives you

the option of XP or Vista pre-installed, although they recommend Vista. (I

assume that's because Microsoft gives them a better deal on Vista, their

"cut" is bigger.) I bought the Dell at WalMart and pre-installed Vista was

all they had. Although it sucks big time I have come to an understanding

with it. I figure if 300 lb. welfare mothers with big hair, 100 lb redheads

who smoke a lot and truck jockeys can use Vista, I can too.

Good luck,

Earle

Well that's even BETTER than XP. What's kurttrail wittering on about?
