Yes, it is true that MS will replace Vista. Just the matter of when.

Depends on your definition of "near future"

I believe it will be sometime in 2010.

No, not in the "near future". Of course there will be a newer version of

Windows someday, but it is years away. Don't hold your breath!

Thank you, all. I don't have any issues with Vista but the comment

came up during the family get-together today.

Well, yeah - we all know how accurate Microsoft's release date schedules

are! Even if it does manage to come out in 2010 (4th quarter?), it will be

at least another year before SP1 comes out, and Windows releases are never

seriously looked at until SP1, so that means late 2011/early 2012 time

frame.

Of course, then we will be seeing the predictable "Why is Windows 7 such a

pig/slow/incompatible? Vista is so lean and mean and fast and runs

everything! Now is the time to switch to Linux! Microsoft's days are

numbered!" posts here. Just like we saw with the 3.1 to 95 transition, the

NT 4 to 2000 transition, the 98/2000 to XP transition and the current XP to

Vista transition.

Some things never change.

Not until 2010 At The Earliest, Microsoft Does Plan 2 Discontinue

Support 4 Windows XP In 2009, However, Leaving Many Computer Users With

You are so right. The same whiners who castigate Vista today will be signing

"save Vista" petitions in 2010 or 2011.

You mean Vista is a stop gap, only 2 years....

Oh, the people must be pissed. That is a pretty short life cycle.

Most people who don't like Vista

disliked windows ME, but liked every other incarnation of windows.

I see that as fair judgment. They dislike bad versions, but like good

versions.

You are generalizing without a basis, calling people whiners while you are

whining about people with valid opinions.

So if you have a functioning XP PC, wait 2 years and treat Vista like Me.

LOL. The same trolls will also be here, urging everyone to "switch to

Linux"! Of course, Linux will still be running less than 1% of desktops -

but 2012 WILL BE THE YEAR OF LOTD!

Being fair, MS is targeting 2011 for XP termination, but I would not doubt

in 2009 any active development ceases. After that is it likely security

fixes only.

So, which Linux? Lots to choose from.

OpenSUSE, Novel SUSE, Red Hat, Fedora, Debien, Ubuntu....

Loading OpenSUSE in VirtualBox right now.....

> Most people who don't like Vista

I disliked ME but like Vista. Of course I am not a counterexample to what

you said.

ME was an evolutionary dead-end -- it was the lame duck version of Windows

that preceded the discontinuation of the Windows 95-98 product line.

Instead of using ME, we should have (and many of us did) switched to Windows

NT or 2000.

Vista is an evolutionary step. It is XP with improvements, continuing the

NT-2000-XP line.

You have a point. XP lasted 5 years, if I recall correctly, and 2000 lasted

3 years.

Windows 7 may not be all that different from Vista, though. When we

consider the frequency of changes we also have to ask how much change is

happening.

May I ask what does Linux have to do with this person's question?
