Consumers benefit from competition in the market. That is true, but with

Ubuntu/Linux out there, Microsoft can compete with their hands tied behind

their backs and DOS 6.2 on the PC!!!!!!

Oh yea, start your research. Go to the library and ask the librarian to

help you find the right books. Then take them to someone who can explain it

all to you. In about 2 years, you just might have a clue!

Ooops - looks like we both were wrong. Office 2008 for OS X DOES have the

ribbon, and the above review seems to like it! I'll have to break down and

install it on my OSX86 here!

So much for "everyone hates the ribbon"!

Well, some of your choices of software, are a bit lame. Like IE, Mail,

AOL IM. And I'm sure there are versions of Office that will run on wine,

and you could use vmware rather than VPC. Most of which you should have

no trouble figuring out in minutes. And you could even run your Windows-

only dev tools in a virtual environment, though I'd admit that it would

be better running natively on a MS OS.

But see there are even linux options that are open to you, if you ever

feel the need or the want to try.

But you did ignore the rest of my previous post, which was much more my

point. That even you don't ever want to use a Linux distro, the very

fact that they exist and are starting to show signs of competing with MS

for the consumer PC Desktop, is good for all consumers, especially for MS

OS consumers.

Embracing MS's competition is in the best self-interest of all MS's OS

consumers.

I have the feeling his "research" will consist of furiously looking for a

review that doesn't like the ribbon!

Well yeah, since MS was a monopoly. Linux is getting easier much closer

to that sweet spot where the average moron will have no problem using it.

It may take a little longer than that before it is easy enough for the

likes of you and Frankie.

But nothing you said negated the fact that any competition MS gets in the

PC OS market will benefit MS OS consumers, and it is in ya'lls best self-

interest to cheer on the competition, rather than trying to fight it.

That may be true, but Linux/Ubuntu is just a blip on the radar at MS. They

could really care less. I think they are more worried about Google and

So there is no advantage to switching. I'd end up emulating everything.

Like I keep saying, Linux gives me nothing that I don't already have.

To the effect that it puts pressure on Linux developers make better

distros. Yes. But Linux developers don't need that, since the main

pressure on them, in the OS market, is gaining market share, and that is

all the market force they need at the moment.

Probably. But that's where MS's OS consumers can help bring MS's focus

back on them. MS's bread is still mainly buttered by revenue from its

client software divison. Consumers can be just as an important market

force as market competition.

When did that happen? If MS was a true monopoly you would no be able to
