Why ask such a stupid question?

LiveCDs are used so that folks can get a feel or taste

of the product... the same reason why Microsoft has

released numerous VHD products.

But, most LiveCDs can also be installed.

Suggesting an alternative to the buggy, virus and malware prone, DRM,

WPA and WGA riddled OS is most definitely helping people. Lying about

and insulting people like Frank does most definitely helps no one.

To see if your hardware will work with Ubuntu, of course. You don't

really get a feel for it until you've updated it and installed the

programs you want and the codecs, video drivers, Beryl, etc.

Preaching Linux in a Windows group is the very definition of troll.

What kind of reaction would I get if I went to the Linux groups and

answered *every* request for help with "switch to Windows"?

Which it (mostly) did. The only thing that didn't work was the

wireless nic. Wired nic worked fine.

Sure you do. There were no apps that I wanted to install, since there

are none that I wanted period. For some people I'm sure it's good

enough, just not for me.

Exactly. That's what I used it for. I just didn't like the feel or

taste.

It doesn't install in VPC. I've tried several times, with 2 versions.

Not a helpful suggestion because Linux isn't

Buggy

Virus or malware prone.

Riddled with DRM.

Packaged with WPA and WGA.

Soooooooooooo, if you think one should have control over one's computer,

Ubuntu is obviously a better choice than Vista.

Don't like my suggestions? Don't read them.

Like I said, you really don't know what it's like until you install it.

The live CD won't show what Beryl can do, for example. You can't find

out what the search is like unless you've installed it and have

something to search for, etc., etc. You can't play with Streamtuner and

see how well it rips songs off the radio and converts them into MP3s. Of

course, if you went in with the attitude that you won't like it, it's

unlikely you will.

Compatible with what your friends/neighbors/coworkers are running.

Sooooooo, if you want to actually run real applications on your

computer, and not spend months testing endless "distros" to see which

one is "right for you", Windows is obviously a better choice than Linux.

Don't like Windows? Go away.

Then you are doing something wrong or your machine

Seriously, try using VMWare.... so much better than VPC 2007.

I have PCLinuxOS installed in a vm and also on a partition on another

desktop, it replaced an Ubuntu install I had.

My next "project" will be to finally give FreeBSD 6.2 a try.

It's the attitude most fanatics display about their cause/crusade.

Or, they're just close-minded and ignorant. Actually,

I think in order to be a true fanatic or zealot, requires

Well, well, well...now we've arrived at a tipping point. You've now just

admitted (finally!) that you can't really know what an os is like

We all have known and believed that fact from the beginning. It's good

Therefore you don't really know what Microsoft's Vista Operating System

So please, from this point on, refrain from referring to Vista in any

So you finally admit you're one of those dummies that can't figure out

HOW to install Linux. Thanks for sharing.

The FACT is Linux is often a superior OS for many uses, the problem is

no major software developers support it hence it isn't suitable for a

lot of users that use high end Windows software where there simply

aren't any really good alternatives...yet. That's the catch 22.

Don't be so ridiculous. Comparing housing and even food to

some fukkin piece of software is just plain ignut.

However, if the housing and food was of the same quality or

better and was being giving away for free- could you blame

folks for at least trying it?
