Frustrated Vista users that come here and don't know about Ubuntu *will*

hear about it. When they, unlike you, install Ubuntu, they will find

links to forums and documentation by merely opening Firefox, something

you wouldn't know about unless you've installed Ubuntu, which, of

course, you haven't because you're too stupid to install it.

My point is that linux has some great stuff but the desktop is NOT its

In a nutshell: I've been using Vista continuously on my main computer since

it was launched in the UK on 30th January 2007.

It was a bit "fragile" to begin with, but it has become more and more solid

as the patches have rolled in. It runs 24/7/52 and has NEVER crashed. The

only reboots are those forced (rarely) after a patch.

In my opinion: the so-called "classic" chiselled look of W95 was OK in its

day, but is actually very visually "noisy" (highlights, shadows, splitters,

etc) compared with the flatter and smoother XP look.

In my opinion: the XP user interface, with its Fisher Price colour scheme,

stupid sounds (giggling children, for god's sake) and the patronising "My"

in front of everything was an insult to the intelligence of the user,

although it works well enough.

In my opinion: the Vista user interface is an improvement on XP, although

they do seem to have made some changes that don't add value - they're just

change for the sake of change. Certainly it is more polished and

sophisticated and doesn't patronise the user. In fact, I would go so far as

to say that the Vista UI is really what XP should have had from the

beginning. Aero is OK, I guess, although I'm not convinced the transparency

adds much to useability.

UAC doesn't bother me - the prompts became quite rare once I'd finished

installing and fiddling with everything. Now I quite like the computer

telling me when something with security implications is about to happen.

There's a lot of new technology under the hood of Vista - and it's a shame

that relatively little of it shows to the user (the bit that does - UAC - is

unfamiliar to Windows users and thus annoying). However, I think it shows

promise for future OS developments.

To summarise, then, I prefer Vista to any of the previous Windows versions.

My installation has been rock solid and performs well. Having said that,

the advantages apparent to the user are fairly underwhelming.

Woohoo it's a cube. Again, this is NOT a program, it is an OpenGL

compositing and windows manger. Just sits on top of Gnome, KDE, etc. In fact

you are wasting resources because this has to ride on top of the shell,

instead of being integrated.

And that is because for the most part, they are not equivalent to a

comparable Windows program. Again, you get what you pay for.

You know, you shouldn't embarrass yourself like this, because there are

those of us that know both systems, and can prove you wrong. Unlike you

zealots however, I could care less what operating system you use. If Linux

does it for you, great. As long as you can do the stuff you need to do.

Should I go into c.o.l.a. and telling them that is crap, and they need to

switch to Vista? What you smacktards lack though is respect for people's

decision to use what they want. You and your ilk are a smacktards not

because you use Linux or whatever, but because you are just like any other

loony group of zealots. You get treated like a bunch of retards. You guys

could be so beneficial to the support group of your chosen OS, so why you

all choose to continue to act like imbeciles is very puzzling. Just once you

might want to try being unbiased. You might find that you like it.

Not unless they can run programs of their choice, where they are not having

Most home users, as I stated, don't need specialized programs and could

not only save money by installing Ubuntu instead of Vista, they would

save money having to pay someone to clean up the viruses or malware that

they inadvertently get. I know it would cost a lot of the techs here

money if everyone switched to Ubuntu as there would be no more Windows

machines to clean up and it therefore perfectly understandable that you

would like to perpetuate FUD about Linux in general and Ubuntu in

particular.

Translation: alias is scamming little old ladies out of their hard

earned money by lying to them about the fact that they have a malware,

virus infected computer when all they actually have are a lot of "cookies".

Vista is not prone to malware or viruses.

You're out of touch and out of tune on top of being a known liar. Vista

is prone to getting infected with malware or viruses. And linux is not

immune to getting malware or virus infected.

Stop the lying!!!

And Frank, nine minutes later, posts the standard FUD sprinkled with

stupidity, ignorance, insults, lies and bluster. What a lamer.

You really are the most insulting person. My condolences to your family..

People can install Ubuntu and the compromise programs if they so desire, but

most don't so desire even though they are free. Have you ever asked yourself

why they don't? I don't believe that you care one iota as long as you get a

stab at MS.

Why aren't you beta testing for Ubuntu? You won't load an Ubuntu edition

unless you think that it has been perfected. Where is your true commitment

to Linux? Do you have any? There is a call for programmers, developers etc

on the Ubuntu web site. What are you doing for their cause other than making

Ubuntu users look like anti-MS/Mac zealots?
