Yeh, I guess email clients, multimedia programs, photo collection utilities,

networking utilities and an effective commandline shell are all too

technical for you. Understandable if one is a Vista Fanboy. For the rest of

the world, Linux provides everything anyone needs to run a computer

efficiently. Just in case you've never looked, today's Linux distros

actually contain a GUI desktop, with icons, wizards and all

that "technical" stuff you seem unable to assimilate without the need to go

to third-parties to purchase functionality.

Cheers.

That's maybe 14 apps. Do you want to do the simple Math or should I?

Is there a personal finance app in your list? No there isn't, and if you go

to sites where there are Linux personal finance applications, all of them

state quite clearly that they do NOT have all of the features of either

Quicken or MS Money, and that a user of either of these would have to

substantially change the way they work if they made the swap, foregoing some

features. This kind of scenario so often seen with open source applications

is not an 'alternative'. It is a compromise.

I take nothing away from the people who spend their time on open source

programming. They do a great job, and the fact that many open source

applications are free is a good thing.

BUT, when advising computer users to switch to a different platform, knowing

darned well that you will not be there to guide them properly, or to advise

them that there will be quite marked differences, is doing a disservice to

the user and the Linux movement as a whole..

What you have mentioned doesn't get close to the 25000 free programs. What

you should say is that there are a few alternatives/compromises..

Better than saying "Stick with Vista, because some day, maybe after SP3,

it'll be useable."

And what can anyone conclude by that kind of answer? Only that it's been

uttered by a Microsoft Fanboy who does a disservice to other computer users

by promoting a broken bloatware toy operating system and spreads FUD

against alternatives that really work well. Only reasons I can see for this

kind of behavior are:

* the Microsoft Fanboy holds Microsoft stock and will do anything to keep

that stock value up.

* the Microsoft Fanboy makes a living helping other MS users keep their

computers clean of malware and recovering their data when the toy operating

system collapses. It's in the Microsoft Fanboys economic interests to keep

others using MS's broken operating systems.

* the Microsoft Fanboy knows just enough about trying to keep MS's toy

operating systems afloat to look like an "expert". This helps stroke their

egos.

* the Microsoft Fanboy knows little about how computers really work but are

somewhat proficient of clicking their way though MS wizards. This lack of

general computer knowledge scares them from really learning how another

alternative OS works because that would mean unlearning all the spoonfed MS

ways and learning something new. An investment in time that they are too

lazy or incompetent to undertake.

* All of the above.

I think this has got you pegged.

Cheers.

BTW, (assuming you're somehow connected to this online forum) why is the

above URL running on Linux? Did you look around for an effective answer to

running an online forum and found that phpBB and Linux was the way to go?

Why did you "Switch to Linux" in this instance? Just curious.

And how would YOU define "trolling" when you challenge others while at the

same time "not walking the walk"?

You and your other linux troll pal just can't stand the fact that Vista

is very usable today. You and your other linux pal have this fanatical

love for linux and this pure hatred for MS and you guys are unable to

control yourselves or your emotions about these two os.s.

There is something mentally wrong with you and your pal that you don't

get that this is an MS/Vista ng. Not a linux ng.

Why is that?

And I lnow I have the two of you pegged.

Give me a break you Wintard. Like I have the time to explain to YOU the

significance of each of 25000+ packages. Go and try them for yourself, if

you're capable. You'll soon learn what real power is on the desktop.

Until then, go and play Minesweeper and defrag your See Drive.

I have never posted using a name "Francis". My name is Frank. I know

you've posted using "doris day" and "nostop". That is why I refer to you

Gulp! Listen to THE Usenet Village Idiot! Charging me with everything it's

become "famous" for. Gawd, are you the dumbest thing I've come across in a

long long time. Now Francis, back to your marketing job - "will that be

fries with your order?' and stop strolling.

Cheers.

Well...so far you're "THE Usenet Village Idiot" in this conversation.

Charging me with everything it's

Still doing your insult act huh? Do you always feel that you're cornered

like a rat and have to resort to your status quo routine? Or is it that

you really don't know how to respond?

You're a troll aren't you.

I never once expressed an opinion on Linux. I like it and use it every day.

In some ways I prefer it to Windows. If I was running a web hosting business

I would probably have mostly Linux servers, although from what I've seen of

Server 2008 and IIS7 I may change that opinion over time. That has nothing

to do with helping people with Vista. I stand by what I said. When someone

asks a question about Vista telling them to switch to Linux isn't much help.

They have a computer with Vista. If they wanted Linux they would have a

computer with Linux and be asking their question in an appropriate Linux

newsgroup or forum.

I can't understand people that espouse one OS over all others. I've used

almost every OS that has been available for micro and mini computers over

the years. I can honestly say that I've been productive with all of them and

haven't seen one that I'd use to the exclusion of all others. As far as

versions of Windows I by far like using Vista better than any other, except

perhaps Server 2008 but it's too new to say for sure.
