The very first thing you must do is to determine, from the laptop

manufacturer, whether XP drivers are available. If they aren't, do not

proceed.

 

To install XP, you're going to have to wipe the drive first you will remove

Vista by way of formatting, or deleting and recreating the partition and

then formatting it.

 

You'll need another XP Pro license no version of Vista with Home in the

name has downgrade rights, so you'll have to buy one. You will need either

an OEM or a full retail version of the disk. With an OEM version

(cheaper), you'll have to wipe the drive first, perhaps using another XP Pro

non-OEM CD. OEM XP CDs check for an installed version of XP and will not

install if there's a different OS version installed. The retail XP Pro CD

will not have this limitation. Upgrade versions will require that you have

qualifying install media, such as a WinME or 2000 or XP Home CD available

for the license check.

 

Reboot to the XP install CD and proceed.

 

But again, if you can't get XP drivers, don't do this.

to http://www.ubuntu.com, download the ISO, burn it to a CD and run the live CD.

 

To your dismay, Frankie boy, many Vista infested computers won't run XP

but they WILL run Ubuntu.

Putting an operating system on a laptop is very much like dealing with

differential equations. Before looking for the solution, you must first

determine whether a solution exists!

 

By that I mean that your laptop may be unable to run an OS other than the

one it has.

 

If your specific laptop does not have drivers to meld its hardware with the

OS, the chances of a solution are slim.
