Bingo for me at least.

I had the Vista "Calculating" hang on a brand new Vista machine. As

soon as I took an old, probably crappy D-Link Switch out of the path

from the Vista machine to my network server, boom - problem

disappeared.

Me thinks Vista get somehow confused by the D-link switch.

In my case, the "calculating" hang is some kind of bug in Explorer

under certain hardware scenarios. Once I removed an old D-link Switch

from the path from my Vista machine to a network share, the

calculating hang disppeared. I'd assume that there is a bug in the

"calculating feature" (which users should be allowed to turn off) that

causes it to hang when IP'ing through certain old networking devices.

Lousy programming and lousy testing by Microsoft.

Funny, I previously suggested checking all of the LAN/WAN hardware to

one person an got slammed for doing so.

Go figure?

Probably just one of several things wrong. Before I made the changes I

mentioned in other threads I got the calculating time hang just

transferring files between different hard drives internally in the

same box. No network involved.

You know Microsoft screwed something up if when you try to delete a

single file it can take ten seconds to thirty or more. Doing the same

thing from a shell like Directory Opus you can delete GB's worth of

files and it is almost instant.

Of course idiots like Frank will stand on a stack of bibles and curse

anybody that said Vista is broke.

Can't control your rage over me kick your dumb arse all over this ng can

you, you stupid moron!

Never said some things in Vista aren't broken, they're just aren't

consistently broken and obviously you don't have the computer acumen to

figure out how to fix them or do workarounds.

You have one big stupid mouth and your pointy head shoved all the way up

your arse.

Give it up bozo as you'll never be smarter than most people.

Which would very occasionally be useful when you have one of those "Oh

Sh*t" moments and realize that file was the wrong one - except that as

slow as it goes you still can't stop it :)

This sounds a bit like a thread in one of the TechNet forums - are you

from there, too? That was about this issue, and someone was pondering

about RPC as a possible factor. I suggested this state chart:

Local PC Network Shares

Explorer.exe A B

Cmd.exe C D

On the face of it, you'd expect network issues to make B and D slow,

whereas Explorer issues would be expected to make A and B slow.

But a slow network connection might make A and B slow while leaving C

and D fast, if the effect is mediated through Explorer fiddling with

the namespace and thus inappropriately traversing the slow network

connection as part of that namespace fiddling.

So I'd try things like keeping the network switch but dumping any

shortcuts, letter mappings or shell folder redirects to the network,

and see whether that speeds things up.

A namespace overhead could have that effect. I suspect there are

basic scalability issues here, and/or an unawareness of the impact of

"slow" or "expensive" devices. More in the TechNet thread on that.

What's the crash information for that failure?

http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#bucket

That sounds like a hang bucket, of course, which are generally ten times the

nuisance to diagnose, but if there is a problem there I do generally work

with the right people to sort that type of thing out.

What's the crash information for the above referenced crashes?

We both can agree that it shouldn't be crashing. Given crash information,

it should be possible to either fix you up or get it On The List.

I've been out of the country without network access.
