10 mins to sort itself out when rebooted, whereas my xp machine is far ore

responsive & quicker

I've not tried the SP beta myself, but reviews have indicated that it

will not fix any major problems. IMHO - you'd be better off with

something else that is more robust - XP or Linux.

Leave it overnight. Vista has to update some internal database. It does not

have time to do it. Leave it overnight at least a couple of times a week and

you will see the result. It is better to leave it one pretty much

continuously with low power settings enabled when you don't use it. When you

use it set the power settings for best performance.

Installing Windows Server on a desktop is just plain stupid. The Server is

not designed to run desktop applications and some applications will not

work. Plus the cost. Don't you get it? Now go play with your server and

look at the screen. The server is suppose to share resources and of course

yours will just be sitting there.

problem for many years in XP and then in Vista.

What I ended up doing after a person from another forum suggested me to do

was to purchase a Belkin Internal 5-Port USB PCI card. He purchased

Belkin's. I did not quite trust the maker but went for his pointer. It

resolved the eissue completely. I removed a firewire PCI card in the back

that I never used and plugged in Belkin. It isntalled itself and I've never

had any problems since.

This card and similar cards by other makers allow for the 5-th USB port to

be engaged. It is not exposed to the elements. It faces the internals of the

computer. However, if you have a floppy you do not need you can buy another

External USB card (not PCI) and mount it up front ripping off the floppy

drive. Thus you will have 8 fully functional USB ports and they will all

work.

I did it on 2 machines so far. I do not need to use the 5th, internal port.

I now have plenty.

Why does she need a server. It is a totally different world in terms of UI,

etc. What a strange idea!

After reading the thread it sounds like this computer originally had XP and

was upgraded to Vista. If you didn't do a clean install I'd recommend trying

this. If you did do a clean install then the computer may not really be

Vista compatible. I have installed vista on many systems. Some systems just

do not work right with Vista. They were designed before Vista. Sometimes a

BIOS upgrade will help but in the end some motherboards just plain have

problems with Vista. If you have one then I'd recommend going back to XP.

SP1 will probably not fix your problems. If you didn't do a clean install of

Vista then wiping the system and starting again may fix your problems. If

you decide to downgrade to XP you will be doing a wipe and install anyway so

it may be worth it to give Vista try with this method.
