I'm at the end of my rope with Vista Business... Almost everything takes 10

times longer to install and configure, it won't even consistently synch with

my Tilt w/ WM6. I'm on the verge of converting my license to XP Pro and I'm

wondering if SP1 will provide the fixes to this and a myriad of other hassles

that have made the "upgrade" to Vista extremely painful. I'm tire of my

printer drivers having to be reinstalled every time I turn the printer on

because Vista forgot I had that printer. The only feature that I might miss

is the window preview when you hover over an app on the start bar and that's

not nearly enough to continue.

My small group of friends and associates share this excremental view of

Vista but I thought I would put this out here:

Is there any compelling reason to wait for the SP1 that might appear in 3 to

6 months or should I convert to XP Pro or Linux?

Vista works fine for millions. I have Vista on 4 machines. Everything works

faster than in XP.

You are a provocateur. You are one of those trolls, Vista haters who try to

scare people considering installing Vista. Your post, whoever stand behind

it is bogus.

Take your sh*it elswhere.

SP1 should be out by April at the latest.

My installation works fine.

Question: The computer you're using -- has it ever run XP? Or did it come

with Vista? If it's never run XP then maybe the problem is with the

computer. I have not heard of having to reinstall printer drivers again and

again. I certainly don't have to with Vista. Maybe it's a hardware issue?

I am in exactly the same quandary. I am having terrible problems with USB

drivers on my Vista machine and I have lost days of productivity trying to

fix it. I too am considering the drastic action of formatting and

reinstalling everything on XP.

I also wish to buy a laptop and am in a similar quandary. I really don't

want to buy a Vista laptop at the moment. Dell say they will sell me one of

their laptops with XP on it, but if it was designed to run Vista I fear that

I will have problems trying to run XP on it.

It would certainly be reassuring if there was a date for Vista SP1.

Hi DP,

The machine in question ran XP flawlessly including activesynch with several

devices.

And to AlexB: I am neither a troll or provocatuer. If I am to be labeled a

Vista hater, it's purely on the basis of personal experience and money

wasted. If your response is indicative of the "quality" of discourse, I

shall indeed depart these august surroundings.

I don't think that's an issue.

I don't think that's an issue.

Sometimes Vista is 'too fast' for things like syncing with some other device.

It uses the faster IP protocol called 'IPv6', (instead of IPv4), and you may

have to look into setting the speed of the connection to 'half-duplex' to get

your Vista to 'talk slower to the old man' :) I don't know what is available

for your particular device, but let me use an ethernet card for example. You

would open device manager (devmgmt.msc) to the 'network adapter' device, and

double click for the Properties page. There would be a "Speed' tab to set

'Half Huplex' instead of something like 'autodetect'.

If you have trouble doing that, starty a new thread here, explaing what

connection you need to slow down. There are certainly a bunch of

configurations for hardware, and you need to be specific about what devices

are in use.

As far av IPv6 goes, it is no worry, since Vista uses 'tunneling' to send a

6 packet inside a 4 packet. (and we can all use a 6 packet :))

There is NO compelling reason to wait for SP1 or to wait for SP5 for that

matter when you can be running a real operating system NOW. Don't even

think about converting to XP Pro. That's old news, an old o/s that ain't

going anywhere. Go with Linux, it is the future.

Ignore AlexB and his ilk. AlexB is just a paranoid right-wing idiot who is

constantly looking around his bedroom for communists. When he's not doing

that, his mommy gives him some computer time and he comes here to call

See, you have to be a troll. You don't even know what month it is. It

isn't August, it's February!

See, you have to be a troll. You don't even know what month it is. It

isn't August, it's February!

Yea, Linux is the future in about 20 years. Right now it is for geeks who

want to tinker and play with their computers. IF they want to get real work

done, use a Windows or Macintosh solution.

For servers, Linux is more stable than Windows, but we are mostly talking

desktop here.

Oh yea, Just FYI.

Well, don't leave yet. Yes, you will find the fierce Vista defenders here.

(I'm just a mild Vista defender. My installation has been flawless, but

obviously others' results have varied.) And you will find folks who will

find every conceivable opportunity to flog the Linux horse. Often, these two

factions fight in a very ugly fashion.

But hopefully, you will find help here. There are lots of smart people in

this newsgroup.

I can't help you at all with your synching issue, since I don't have any

kind of device like that. As for the printer, just a couple of thoughts come

up. I doubt that these directly relate to your problem, but I might as well

ask them anyway.

Do you always keep your printer plugged in to the computer (usb port,

presumably)? Sometimes I've found that if I unplug something from one port

and plug it in another, Windows has to go through the whole process of

reinstalling. At least that's my recollection I certainly don't go around

unplugging devices from the computer very often.

Is there anything quirky about the power coming from the wall (i.e., not

your computer's power supply)? You don't have some kind of master switch

that you're turning off after your computer powers down, do you? (I'm

thinking of like a power strip or a UPS that has its own on-off switch) I

mean this is a real shot in the dark, but I was thinking if you had

something like that, you were doing something that makes the computer forget

the printer or something like that.

And finally, this is not a wireless printer connection, is it? Or a printer

on a network?

Anyway, those are my blind stabs at your printer problem. I'm sure others

will (politely) weigh in with better advice.

I would also like to say that I find Vista 64 bit very slow, it takes about

10 mins to sort itself out when rebooted, whereas my xp machine is far ore

responsive & quicker
