As we all know Intel has always been desperate to have Apple as a

customer. Apple was just too demanding in the past for Intel to measure

up, but now Intel has learned to work at the level of Apple and has

again built a chip exactly to Apple's specifications.

The MacBook Air is the first to have this fast, super low temp chip.

Apple correctly says it's the world's thinnest Laptop, but they don't

mention it's also the world's coolest running.

A good read:

You may have wondered how it is possible that the MacBook Air is getting

a new Intel microprocessor - a processor that is so new that it has not

been available for any other product. We actually have seen other

examples of Apple being treated as a very special customer by Intel,

such as the exclusive availability of the 3.0 GHz quad-core Xeon last

year.

A little investigation reveals that Intel actually did develop a

processor for Apple and its MacBook Air. And, if you are aware of the

background story, this special Apple chip makes a whole lot of sense for

both Apple and Intel.

Intel has a long history of offering what essentially amount to

bribes (although I'm not claiming they're illegal, but the are

used similarly) to entice various companies to buy their

products over those of their competition. They did this to good

effect with Dell for many years before Dell finally started

selling AMD-based systems, for example.

A little more investigation would likely reveal that Intel made

this promise /before/ Apple announced the switch to Intel from

PPC.

I read that this is the old Merom core in the new small packaging that Intel

is rolling out for their next generation mobile chipset.

The bad news is that it isn't especially powerful or low-temp- the actual

CPU isn't anything special- but the good is is that Apple should be able to

cheaply upgrade to the next generation chipset, when it becomes available.

I assume Apple intends to do this. There's not really much point in using

the smaller packaging if not It's not like the normal packaging is so big,

or the MacBook Air so small.

Not so. The ordinary MacBook is the same size, but is more powerful.

It may be the "lightest laptop for its size", however. As far as I've seen,

the only laptops lighter than the MacBook are ultra-portables, which are

also smaller (and therefore have smaller screens and keyboards). The MacBook

Air is as light as an ultraportable, but bigger. Personally, I don't see

much of a market for that. That's probably why advocates here sometimes try

to pass the thing off as "small".

Some people use their systems for more than a 3d cube "7". Do try to

remember that. Now go back to your cell and the nurse will bring you an

"appil".

Obviously your 7 brain cells don't know anything about CPU performance.

Intel has been absolutely kicking AMDs ass when it comes to high end

performance. Since you know absolutely NOTHING about high-end CPU

performance, I'd stick to running your little linux on a old 386SX computer.

Oh yeah... AMD performance is really close to what Intel delivers. NOT!

I'm very happy with AMD's performance and even happier with the price.

Yea, but you would still have 3 underpowered PCs and even worse you would

Only an idiot or a super geek would remove a fine operating system like OSX

actually, it's completely true. Intel had begged Apple for decades to

become a customer, but intel wasn't up to Apple's standards. Intel even

admitted that.

I see lots of spinning desktops but nobody getting anything done. It's

all G with no UI. Maybe somebody can turn that graphics technology into

a UI.

Right now Apple's the only one incorporating new graphic metaphors:

expose', time machine, spinning to set app preferences, cover flow etc

with an eye toward usability. I use those GUI devices all the time. The

gee whiz is gone and they are simply a much appreciated part of the

workflow.
