Re: Are you NUTS?

I have to go with Demonkey on this. 95% of everyone I have come in

contact with that has Vista, is now looking for some way to slit their

wrist or open a major artery. Even my boss who bought 3 new computers

was told he HAD to have vista on them because they dont sell computers

with XP on them anymore.

Issues:

Vista does not support DCC (direct cable connection) between two

computers, even if they are BOTH Vista computers.

Vista and other software packaged with it has several annoying "needs

access to internet to update" messages which cant be disabled. (two

computers at work will never be connected tot he internet)

Vista was released FAR before it was a solid OS because there was a

deadline to meet and you will get all your bug fixes and patches thru

the internet (if you have internet) over the course of the life of

Vista even though the NEW OS. "Windows 7" "Fiji" and "Vienna" are all

windows OS's that were started even before Vista was released. (Fiji is

more of a tuneup to Vista)

Vista owners have to "relearn" windows because of the massive rework of

the start menu and control panel areas, with no specific benefit of

doing so.

Each release of Windows OS costs roughly $400

My suggestion? Get a Mac. Each OS release is only $129, is fully

functional, doesnt estrange the user from the last version, doesnt

require massive updates, Networks to "any" computer system (windows,

linux, unix, ubuntu, etc) supports DCC to ANY computer system, does not

require internet access to "fully operate". The list is incredibly

long.

Other known issues with Windows: The Windows OS is all there is.

Mac goes beyond just an OS, with Apple TV, iPod/Touch, , iPhone, Time

MAchine, Time Capsule (backup appliance(server grade HD) + Airport

extreme base station)), Apple TV Take 2.

Windows gets viruses (Mac doesnt, ever)

Windows Vista owners are posting the largest number of owners

downgrading back to XP (Mac users downgrade? where?)

Windows doesnt have any Free Software Upgrades or Updates (iPhones and

iPod)

Windows offers TV shows and Movies with over 125 million sold tv shows

and 7 million movies sold and rents movies to you over the internet

downloaded right to your PC from the top 11 Movie Studios....no

wait...thats all Apple only.

Microsoft offers.....an OS (with no mac compatibility)

Apple offers .....Mac Pro, iMac, Mac mini, Macbook, Macbook Pro,

Macbook Air(thinnest in the world), iPod/nano/shuffle/classic/touch,

iPhone, Apple TV, AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule(1 TB), and Microsoft

software (2008 Office, Messenger, Excel, Word) Adobe Acrobat 8 Pro,

Movie Purchase/rental and download directly to your Computer, iPod,

Laptop, iPhone or HD TV(from your HDTV)

So ya, Vista OS and Microsoft...so solid.

We wont even go into connectivity to Bluetooth in Windows, its

non-existent.

You'd be hard pressed to find two Vista-supported computers that came

without network cards. Perhaps a crossover network cable is a better

solution?

Re: Are you NUTS?

Actually I am a Vista USer at work, and a XP user at home with a dual

boot XP/Ubuntu ssytem and a Mac g5. I don't make comparisons without

having the actual experience. I have been a windows users since 3.10

and a Mac user since 2005.

The crossover cable is a good solution. Its a shame it isnt readily

available information within Vista.

It is the fault of HP, plain and simple! If HP wanted to support the

scanner they would have delivered an HP driver for Vista. Over 100 million

copies sold. How many of your 3-year old HP scanners were sold?

More kilos of crack are sold every year in South Central LA. So what if

All of them work with Linux Ubuntu. I wonder why HP provides the drivers

for Ubuntu Linux and not Vista? MS doing some strong arming again?

You cannot do that because that XP had 1 product key, liscence.. and you

cannot reuse that..

you can buy a cheaper OEM version of XP though..

or if you are a student you can get it for very cheap too

So, how I'd be wasting money by buying a 'used' program on Amazon?

Technically you *can*. MS' EULA says you *may* not.

For me, I have XP. Wife has a newer computer with Vista.

I see no compelling reason that I would want to switch. I did not look

that close, but at first glance, I don't see any great features that

Vista has that made me want to 'upgrade'.

It looks like with Vista, the OS system is the Star. I always ran my

pc with the understanding that a unobtrusive, reliable, relatively

small- footprint, non-flashy OS- that handled the programs installed,

and facilitates the display of my data to be paramount.

Bull**** HP's fault.

If my scanner or printer is running fine on MS Operating System XP, it

should run well without any modifications on MS's new operating system

Vista as well. It is a very simple logic. If I have a product where my

customer is satisfied with, and I am bringing out a new product, my

customer should not hassle with the new product, instead of that my

customer should be able to use it much easier and faster than with the

old one.

I could call myself a mid to high informed person about computers

compared to the person out on the street. Even I am struggling to find a

way to the slow network transfer speeds which is a big problem for me in

my daily business. File transfer is one of the most common things you do

with your computer nowadays but why the hell does Vista do it much

slower than XP, I simply don't get it. I don't care about the technical

crap info that is behind it. For me it is important to plug the network

cable to my laptop, and start the file transfer in Vista. If it is

slower than my XP laptop, I do get frustrated!

In general, there are a couple of good changes in Vista which make the

OS better, but for the average user, I would never ever in the world

recommend switching to Vista. Why bother, if you got a smooth running

system like XP? I did bother, because the laptop I wanted to buy didn't

have the possibility of having an XP installed on it. So I went for it.

And I will sooner or later find the solutions to my problems to Vista on

the net as well. But a normal PC User won't be able to find answers to

most of their questions and they will get really frustrated, believe

me!!

HP's fault not supplying new drivers! Really funny. When XP came out,

it had all the new drivers for the old machines pre-installed.

--

aaalp

the solution to your problem is simple, and you would have avoided all the

frustration had you came here before you got vista and asked if you should

get it.

I would simply explain that vista is crap and should be avoided, rather you

should get xp instead

the best way to have both os is get a computer that provides downgrade

rights to xp, that way you have both vista and xp and you can use any one of

them, (only one installed at a time)

Actually it's not logical to expect the company that writes the OS to

support products said company did not make. It's solely up to HP to

provide the drivers to Microsoft for the testing and inclusion into

the OS. Even then it's up to Microsoft as to whether they want to

include them or not based on the design parameters and the need for

the specific driver in the userbase.

Given that the manufacturer of that product has provided all

interfaces (drivers in this case) for the product to be supported.

Think of it like wheels on a car. In the 60's we used 14" wheels and

most Mustangs had 4 bolt patterns. Buy a Mustang today and it has a

17" wheel and a 5 bolt pattern. Not compatible at all. Unfortunately

the public seems to think that Microsoft is the end-all-be-all and

should have backwards compatibility from Vista 64 to Windows 3.1.

Frankly I wish they'd just dump 32bit support and make Windows 7 in

64bit only.

Not on mine. HP refused or were unable to create a driver to work on XP for

the expensive scanner we had at work that we used with Windows2000.

Visioneer did the same with my home scanner. No drivers for XP. In both

cases new scanners had to be purchased and in each case the brand was

abandoned.
