Due to increase in demand. Yea 2 guys from Italy thought they might need

Ubuntu. They soon came to their senses and ditched it pretty quick. They

went back to XP or Vista and now there is no increased demand for Ubuntu!

I know what the article said. I read it. But still it doesn't matter that

Dell is offereing Ubuntu. Ubuntu no matter how you slice it, is still a

TOY, and people want to play with toys. After users deal with Ubuntu for a

short time, they will ditch Ubuntu and move to a platform that will allow

productivity.

How WRONG you are. Millions and millions of people are very productive on

the Windows platform. Hundreds of thousands of companies use Excel and Word

to run their businesses. The Macro capabilities of Excel and Word (Visual

Basic for Applications) helps people automate their tasks. You can't do

this with OpenSores Office.

 

Look at all the developers writing software (custom applications) for their

businesses. Most medium to large compaines have custom software written to

automate their businesses. Most of the development is done on the Windows

platform.

 

Unix is great for servers in the business environment. I have to agree that

the Unix server is far superior to a Windows based server. I have never

disputed that fact.

 

What I do dispute is that Ubuntu would be productive to the masses on their

home machines. Just isn't going to happen. Unix/Linux/Ubuntu must mature

for that to happen and I don't see that for at least 5-10 years. Maybe then

will it become mainstream. Microsoft may keep shooting itself in the foot

and we will see a transformation, but in the near future, just keep looking

at Unix/Linux/Ubuntu and all other variations on the sidelines.

Like I said, you're entitled to your ill informed opinion. Dell isn't

increasing its Ubuntu offers because no one wants it. Dell does market

studies before they spend a lot of money to deliver a new computer. You

are talking out of your ass as usual. Your other lame post about DVDs

Wrong. People don't know where to turn for information if something doesn't

work. There is NO easy way to extract the information. You are the who

talks out of your ass. You think the world should revolve around Ubuntu and

it doesn't. I know that is your dream, but hold on to your dreams because

it just might take 10 years to it to become true. For now, Ubuntu is just a

blip on the radar. Ubuntu is FREE and people ARE NOT FLOCKING TO IT.

Doesn't that tell you something? Imagine a FREE PRODUCT for everyone and

their market penitration is small.

 

Get over it, use Ubuntu all you want but preaching to the Vista users will

just wear out the skin on your fingers.

Anyway, I'd say that most custom work is actually done in Oracle

itself, or inside applications such as SAP which aren't windows programs.

There's some stuff like StatPak that IS done in Excel but heavy lifting

requires a dedicated application.

Well, ya know, you're not even right about this. Depending on

the role a Windows box can be a much better choice. For instance, there's

NO unix based equivalent to Exchange even the commercial Exchange

"replacements" are just approximations. Window's main liability in server

deployments is that it doesn't scale well. It's a great choice for

small-campus work.

application. You haven't been around much. Hundreds of thousands of

companies use Excel for dedicated applications. Quite a few use Access

After all the people in the USA voted Bush in TWICE so they aren't

exactly the sharpest knives in the drawer. Once Ubuntu gains enough

market share, watch Adobe, Corel, etc. jump on the bandwagon and start

writing for Ubuntu. The YOU will show up and say "I've always used Ubuntu".

I was refering to Ubunto on the desktop. Linux/Unix as a server is a

powerful solution. Much more stable than running Microsoft Windows Server.

Are these Dell's going to be lower in price than one with Windows?

Or are they going to pocket the difference in price by reinstalling a free

OS.
