| David, I do and it shows System Idle Process CPU at 97, yet the HD light is

The HDD light could be connected to something totally different, especially if

you installed a 2nd HDD or a PCI card to connect the HDD's to. I suspect

radiation from a cordless phone that's if Norton AV is not involved. <jk>?

Cymbal Man, The HDD light is connected to the mb.

The HHD light works with either drive as the boot drive. XP or Vista.

The HDD runs fine with the XP drive when firing up programs and such it

flashes and then stops.

But it is not constanly flashing like it does with Vista.

The drives are connected with sata cable on mb.

No cordless phones in the area.

No Norton.

Mr. Arnold, wOw ! Lots of new tools and info to look at, thanks !

I wonder how would anybody get past my firewall router ?

I tried CurrPorts and found a bunch of "customer-reverse-entry" listings.

What should I be looking for with this program ?

With Process Explorer how do I know what DLL's are good or bad ?

I have many locale.nls and a C_1256.NLS with no company name.

I found the ProgramChecker Personal Edition program for free when I was

checking out the dll's info.

http://www.programchecker.com/file/7479.aspx

Is this ok to use for this purpose ?

Please advise.

Thanks !

It doesn't take much in today's environment with users that don't practice

safe hex that will click on everything under the Sun at a website or click

on a link in an attachment from a unknown email sources or even if it they

are known sources.

If the computer gets compromised, then the user has had involvement in

someway. It just doesn't happen by itself.

Any doubious connections to remote IP(s) by applications running on your

computer that you don't know about, which they can also circumvent the

infromation that a personal firewall would be showing.

>

> With Process Explorer how do I know what DLL's are good or bad ?

A DLL will be signed by the company who makes the DLL, which you can check

by right-clicking a DLL in the lower pane and go to Properties. If you

suspect some kind of rouge activity with traffic you are suspicious about,

then CurrPort will show you the application and the connection being made.

You can then use PE to look at that process to see what it is hosting to see

if you can spot anything that doesn't look right.

Also a clue will be what directory is the DLL located. If it's an O/S DLL,

then it should be running out of the System32 directory. If it looks like an

O/S DLL or exe like Svchost, exe and they are not running out of the System32

directory, then you should be very suspicious.

If the program above can help you in anyway to make a determination, then

there is nothing wrong with it.

The bottom like is go look for yourself from time to time with the proper

tools and see what is running on the computer.

Vista has known problems if you play music on your PC. Seriously.

For some reason MS has limited the MIDI configuration options in Vista.

However, if you have a well written music program like Cakewalk Sonar 7

it's all taken care of within the program. Actually the improved memory

and disk handling in Vista makes it easier to create smooth recordings

even on lower end systems (lower end here means 2 GB RAM).

But again, I really like Vista. I like to say it since it's a long time

I've said that about a MS product. I've always had Linux on my

computers in addition to Windows and used it quite a bit since it

worked better for me than Windows did. Now it's Vista which has my

preference. I have no strong feelings about operating systems. I use

what works for me. Right now it's Vista. Also for music.

That's not true. Worms can spread on their own by searching for

machines they can exploit and using those vulnerabilities to install

more copies of themselves.

thetruthhurts, I try to play pandora radio that works thru IE and I cant on

vista, why ?

It cuts out and stops playing.

I refresh the webpage to restart the music and it plays until I open another

webpage and then it stops again.

If I make posts in a forum pandora stops again and again and again, WTF

!?!?!?

I have no problems in XP doing the same things I just mentioned.

I try to watch videos and vista give me a blank webpage telling some bs

error.

Yet I can watch these same videos in XP with no problems.

What is the use of having a computer if it is so crippled that I cannot use

it for what it is intended for ?

This is total BS !

Yes, there are self populating worms. If a worm compromised a computer, then

it found a vulnerable computer, which a Human Being had involvement with it

in someway in setting up that computer. The compromise doesn't happen by

itself.

Such AS? I can music with WMP, Winamp, and QCD with minor differences in

resources used. This includes music CD's, MP3's burned to CD and DVD, MP3's

on the local machine, AND my external I have hanging off my fiancé's XP box.

When will you smacktards actually post TRUE information?

Lol. Might as well say that methylene chloride causes worms, because

every computer has chips and methylene chloride is used to produce chips.

Fact is, you can set up a computer system using current best

practices and well defined security but still be compromised. Remember

Yes, this problem is real. I wish it were a "bug".

A bug can be fixed, even though Microsoft has

not fixed this, yet. If it's not a bug, then it's "by

design" and one has to wonder why. This absolutely

does not happen in Windows XP.

Microsoft is aware of this, it was reported by several of

use during the betas. Of course, if they didn't pay us

any attention, ZDNET should have gotten their attention.

Yet, the problem goes unfixed. Why?

26 years, huh? Did you start counting from the merit badge you

got in Boy Scouts?
