flambe, yes, mine is a socket 939 AMD 4800x2 with the nForce4 chipset.

It is night and day between xp and vista.

I have been waiting for all of the lastest hardware to come out that will

work with the vista/hollywood high def security crap.

So what chipset do you suggest ?

Did you install Vista on the RAID array, or did you install on a single

drive, then convert to an array?

I had Vista on a RAID 0, and saw little disk activity (I am on a nForce 4 MB

with 2 160GB samsung SATA's).

Maybe your AV is doing scanning ?

Did you do an upgrade install over XP on the RAID ?

Are you dual booting with XP and Vista ?

Is the Vista partition too small ?

What size is the SWAP file ?

I manually set the Swap file to 3066MB with 2 GB of RAM on a SWAP partition.

I have a 939 nVidia 4 and mine works really well..

John, I have a dual core and both cores are using about the same.

I look in Task Manager and Performance Monitor and nothing is thrashing,

only my hd light.

philo, yes I do.

forty-nine, I installed Vista on a single drive and that is it.

I have raid shut of in my bios and do not use it.

My av is not scanning.

Clean install on a brand new drive, no upgrades.

One partition, the same size as the drive.

Swap file is at what windows set it to, 2858MB

I use one drive for vista and one drive for xp.

Vista is my default start up drive in my bios.

So if I want to check the mail and surf I let it start up normal.

If I want to game I restart if in vista or enter the bios when first

starting up computer to select my xp drive.

If none of the processes in Vista are showing reads and writes, maybe your

wife (or a virus) installed one of the key loggers on your system.

John, the only things moving in the I/O Reads is csrss.exe and lsass.exe and

I/O Writes is lsass.exe.

I have Show processes from all users checked.

ASUS has some nice board that are Vista-friendly, but in regards to the

chipset you may need to surf around to various forums to see who is the

saddest and then go the other way. My life got a lot easier when I went to

nVidia for both the chipset and graphics. And BTW I went from the 939 socket

to AM2. If I were to buy now I would give Intel a good looksie.

Good luck!

PNutts, I am wanting to try some one other than Asus because of the way I was

treated with this nForce4 A8N-Sli Premium board.

I am steering torward Intel but they cost a lot.

The Spider platform from AMD has caught my eye also.

So I am sitting on the fence for now.

Thanks !

Hello "Bill Bobs":

I built an Intel Quad-core pc and installed Vista Ultimate 64bit with 4x

1GB of DDR2800 RAM and had slow boot times and the cpu use was hardly ever

below 35% during my normal use. I later read about some

motherboard/ram/Vista combinations with 4 GB DDR2 800 Mhz might cause

instability. I switched to 4 sticks with a total of 3 GBs and the pc now

operates way faster even with less memory and the boot times are back to

normal with much less hard drive and cpu activity. You might try cutting

back on your RAM to 2 or 3 GBs temporarily and see if you board/ram have the

same problem A LOT of people have. Good luck.

Billy, you can make your own stripped down version of vista, so stripped

that it can fit on a CD!

The tool you can use is free and its called vlite http://www.vlite.net

Basically what you do is that you make a new install CD with this tool by

stripping what you dont need from the original DVD.. some things you can

remove are in this screenshot, but there are many more

I don't know about this...have no experience doing it the way you did it.

I wonder tho if after booting into Vista, Vista is doing something with this

XP drive (unless it's disabled in the BIOS).

No idea, Billy Bob.

Something ain't right with your setup....I myself would find it far easier

to reinstall than to spend a lot of time trying to figure this out.

As long as you have backups...it would seem the quickest route.

I even keep drivers on a thumb drive, so the reinstall takes about an hour.

(Not counting Office and the like)

Just because the drive is new, doesn't mean it can't be bad.

forty-nine, I can tell when vista is screwing with my xp drive because it is

the raptor and it is louder.

It only screwed with it once when I ran defrag from windows and I had no

control over what drive it defragged and it did both drives.

I can see and use the xp drive from vista.

I wanted to go this route as it tends to learn me on the newer os.

I will format and start over after I have pulled all of my hair out. hahaha )

Thanks for the help !

aaaak, why does everything need .net to run............

Looks like it is a pretty good program from the few posts I read on the

vlite forums.

Thanks !

Dave, so a constant thrashing drive indicates a bad drive ?

xiowan, guess I could turn off memory remapping in my bios.

I have ram water coolers , so it would be a pain to pull just two sticks out

for a test.

Thanks !

Hey Billy..."nostop" is an MS hating, linux loving lying POS,

cross-dressing, mentally derange as*hole.

Don't believe one word he says.

Turn off indexing on your Vista install and see if that helps.

Hey Billy...non-flem [sic] hahaha...is another MS hating jerk. He does

not have Vista and has no idea about Vista. He's also a known, mentally

retarded, delusional idiot.

His best accomplishment to date is building a cardboard space ship in

his mom's basement.

He keeps saying it will fly...hahaha...LOL!

Frank

It could... the last one I had go bad, went ker-klunk,

ker-klunk,ker-klunk,ker-klunk,ker-klunk,ker-klunk

Hello again "Billy Bobs":

OK.........but I'd remember the suggestion so when everything else fails

you have one more thing to try LOL! Seriously, your symptoms are exactly

what I was experiencing and reducing the memory to 3 GBs leaves the pc

running flawlessly and it's a joy to use now!

That's because it's the premier program development solution on the MS

platform.

http://www.dotnetpowered.com/languages.aspx

And about this disk thrashing you're talking about, it could be that your

entire HD data is being uploaded, and you don't know that it's happening. I

knew a person who had his computer compromised, the HD was being uploaded,

and he asked the question. Why is my HD always thrashing? <g>

You can use CurrPorts on Vista as Active Ports doesn't work. With Process

Explorer, you go to Menu View/Show Lower/Pane/Show all Dlls, and PE will

show everything a running process in the upper pane is hosting. You can also

right-click a line in the upper or lower pan to get more information.
