I have let Vista do this hardrive thrashing for many many months now.

I have had it and can no longer take it.

I read that it should have stopped after awhile but it has not.

I just started tweaking to try and make it stop.

I cannot find what is causing the hard drive thrashing or what is holding me

up.

I have to wait my turn just to do the basic computer stuff, why ?

All of this background running around vista does is not helpful to me.

Can you make a stripped down expert version for gamers ?

You have so many vista versions already, what is one more?

Make it so that does not have all of this background bs running, indexing,

cacheing and whatever you think needs to run in the background using up all

of my resources. Have options so I can turn all of this off.

I have turned off vista indexing, defragmenter, search, superfetch, aero,

and killed everything else that is not needed with Autoruns.

The hard drive still constantly thrashes for hours and HOURS !!!!!

This has been going on since I first installed it way back in June 2007.

I have searched to see what is sucking up all of the CPU cycles and nothing

shows up in task manager.

So it is hidden and yet the hard drive light is going a thousand miles an

hour and the CPU usage is way up and so is the ram usage.

I have no virus or malware.

I run vista defender when it pops up on the one day I tell it to run so it

is not it.

I am trying to use the computer but the computer will not let me because it

has to run some bs in the back ground that everybody tells me should not

affect me.

Well it does !

Plus Vista uses up all of my ram to guess at what I am going to open next ?

Give my ram a break !

This hardrive thrashing affects everything I do. I have to wait on it. It

holds me up. It affects my streaming interent radio, cutting it off and on

and then completely off. I have to refresh it to start playing again. This

happens all night long !

I have to wait for webpages to load, etc...

Always waiting on Vista !

I just sat here all day playing the internet radio while watching video with

18 web pages open, checking mail and uploading pictures without one radio

hiccup in XP.

I have to use a third party defragmenter just so I can get defragmenting

over with in 5 minutes versus the 18 hours vista takes.

Where are the little boxes that show me how defragmented it is and how much

longer I have to go until it is done.

I would rather wait for a search than have to wait every time I boot up for

vista to let me do something.

Everything crashes.

Then vista tells me to download the latest updates that I already have.

I submit for solutions from Microsoft and I get nothing.

I have none of these problems with XP and never did.

I am using a 4800x2 dual core with 4gigs of ram, two 7800gtx video cards in

sli, raptor hd, everything is watercooled and Vista still brings it to its

knees all the time.

I have all updated drivers for everything.

WHAT GIVES ???

Is Hollywood to blame ?

http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/vista_cost.html

It is going to suck when I am forced to have to use vista !

I do not know where else to vent my frustrations about this software to get

it fixed.

I have tried every tweak guide to get it running better but nothing helps to

stop the hd thrashing!

What do I do now ? :(

Please help !

Thanks !

I've seen you incendiary and inflammatory post already three time in the

past.

I can explain to you why Vista is doing it for you:: "Because you are a

crook, you are an idiot, and you deserved it."

And you do not deserve any help in this forum.

There's something wrong with your computer.

I have and Intel Pentium D machine with 1 GB of RAM and HD activity is

similar to my other PC which is a Win XP machine and neither of them thrash

the HD.

I would suggest you consider purchasing a new hard drive

that will resolve your hardware issue. My recommendation:

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

Why? What else do you plan to do with your ram?

Carey, this is a brand new Western Digital Hardrive 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache

SATA 3.0Gb/s I bought just for Vista.

I run XP on the WD raptor, sorry.

May be you have 64bit version? I found that to thrash more than 32bit. So i

put on 32bit and it hardly ever thrashes

Hiram, I have absolutley no HD activity on my XP hard drive using all of this

same hardware I use with a seperate harddrive for Vista.

I have run Avast antivirus, Spy Sweeper, Vista Defender all from the time I

installed Vista.

Nothing shows up as a problem.

Does Vista recognize all of your memory?

Seems like I've heard here that Vista can be picky and may have trouble with

memory sticks, even tho the same sticks worked fine in XP.

Not seeing all of your memory would explain why the drive is thrashing so

much.

First thing I do with any windows install (Win2k, XP, Vista)

no matter how good the H/W is...

go to the control panel, system, advanced then set for best performance.

On all the XP machines I work on I do that...then set the theme back to XP

theme...

and the only difference the owners notice is that their system works better.

Works the same with Vista too.

BTW: you do have the chipset drivers installed ?

Ken, guess I should have stated what version I had, sorry.

Vista Business 32bit and Xp 64bit.

er, get a better computer dude, one which is like up to date and stuff,

join the part of humanity which uses latest drivers, dx 10, shader

model 3, 64 bit instruction set, more easily readable graphics, better

utilities , wonderful stability, much hardened security... or else go

for the 'simple' option and go back to 98, lots of people, you wouldn's

believe how many, 5 % are still using 98.. like wow, xp was updated ,

even after sp1, vista is basically a BIG update which fixes stuff that

makes your ohterwise great knowledge like fighting guns with sticks .

some people read one thing and they think they have 20 years of

knowledge

else creep around forums suggesting that you know very well how to use

a pinter menu window system but basically state that you can't make a

system which others find very useful -- we are talking 80% at least in

the next couple of yeas.. work.

keep thrashing about in that cage of rage dude, they keep heating up

the bars with burining oil, bates oil, hate hate hate, vista is evil,

scream man, keep on screaming waaaaaaaaaaaa waaaaaaaaaaaa waaaaaaa, or

like perhaps you could chill out and upgrade

waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa thrashing around, i hope it doesn't keep you up

all night, reality si that you probably have other 'great ideas' which

do that. keep it coming, you are funny - ppl like you keep the hackers

using zombies buring the rest of us up when you feel you have done

something good

Reinstall vista and do only one tweak...turn off Windows Search thru

services !

That's It !

If you been "fiddling" with all those "tweak guides" , there is your

problem.

Also, be wary of these third party "free utilities".

If you defrag on a regular basis, it will never take hours ( unless you

used the wrong RAID drivers or MB drivers )

You have either borked the installation, or you have something "unknown"

running on your PC ( sorry, but you sound like a person who downloads

and installs all kinds of BS)

DP, my vista business 32bit sees 2559MB ram out of the 4gb I use with Xp64bit.

I know the 32bit memory address deal.

But Vista is always using 800mb (31%) Physical Memory usage to over 1gb when

ever I check in the task manager to see what is doing all of the thrashing.

philo, Mine is at let Windows choose, I will try that.

I never had to set it to that in XP, I will try it for vista.

My HD is set to Optimize for Performance

I have not set it back to XP Theme yet.

I am guessing yours is a socket 939 AMD processor with a motherboard running

the Nforce 4 chipset.

While I dislike Vista I believe that the mobo drivers for this chipset are

just unpolished and do not run Vista smoothly.

On my dual boot system that uses this chipset the differences in performance

between Vista and XP are so enormous you can time them by your stopwatch or

by watching paint dry waiting for Vista to complete operations involving

disc access. SP1 does almost nothing to improve perfomance.

Since socket 939 was killed off by AMD long ago there is no impetus for

Nvidia to fix the drivers.

On dual boot systems using more recent chipsets the differences in

performance between Vista and XP are still obvious, just no so pathetically

obvious.

DP, now after sitting here 15 minutes or so after boot up My memory usage is

at 0.99GB.

It shows 39 Free, 1759 Cached, 2558 Total (MB) and System Idle Process is at

97 on the CPU.

So why does vista need all of that ?

Oh and my HD light is flashing away !

Interesting...I use the same drivers for my nForce4 socket 775 Intel SLI x16

board...no problems here.

forty-nine, I turned off Windows Search thru the Services first before all

other tweaks or utilites and I still have the hd Thrashing.

I just started "fiddling" and just loaded that third party defrag this past

week after 6 months of using vista.

I defragged thru regular defrag but it ran for hours and hours then I tried

thru DOS and it took for ever also. So I shut it off and got AUSLogics.

I used AutoRuns to kill anything that was not from Microsoft which was not

much.

Windows installed the MB drivers and then I just reinstalled them again

after I d/l from nVidia.

So all drivers and chipset drivers are correct for my MB.

I do not install any bs until last week.

marz, my system is only 2 years old.

My video cards support shader model 3.0.

dx10 just came out with vista.

nobody has ther poop together yet for me to upgrade all of my hardware.

My system works great in XP, I just want it to work in vista.

That is why I am here seeking help, I have tried everywhere else.

I am not bashing as my Subject title reads, Vista is awful for me, why ?

why ?

hello ?

If you have a multi core processor, is one core getting most of the usage?

XP64 does a great job of allocating processes between cores, but I have had

to manually assign affinity using Task Manager in Vista64. I had one core

top out at 100% with hanging while the other core was practically idle. The

other thing you could do is to use the Task Manager or better the System and

Performance Monitor to see what processes are thrashing.
