The music industry has always been a pain in the butt. It used to be all

about 'having a license to play music in a bar, restaurant, or other public

place'. Then it was people copying music to compact cassettes.

Bear in mind that DRM starts with the product produced by the record

companies, not Microsoft...

I was talking about the DRM in WPA and WGA, not MS' collusion with RIAA,

although that's equally despicable.

Then why did you post a link about RIAA? I don't see even one link in the

search that is relevant to Vista. They are all about copying MP3 files and

ripping CD's.

Another profound and thought provoking post.

P.S. When a word ends in "s", one adds an apostrophe to indicate

possession. Another "s" is not correct: Alias'

Re: alias is an idiot, please ignore all alias's posts!

This is incorrect. When the noun is singular, either way is acceptable.

"James' house" and "James's house" are both acceptable.

When the noun ending in "s" is plural, then only the apostrophe is added.

For some reason, if it is an ancient name, then only the apostrophe is

added, e.g. "Achilles' heel."

No, you don't get it. WGA and WPA are as bad as what the RIAA is doing

with ripping CD songs to a computer. Get it now? The common denominator

is that RIAA and MS want to control what you do with the things you buy.

There are numerous guides to correct grammar and punctuation available just

do a search.

You don't need me for that.

Of course, I also learned this in grade school.

And what happened to users' rights? Without piracy "protection", MS did

quite well with DOS through Win Me. In fact, they did so well, their ex

CEO is the richest man in the world. Course, you ignore the fact that

WPA and WGA doesn't stop real piracy one iota because you believe MS'

FUD. The so-called casual piracy of Windows doesn't even comprise one

per cent of computers running Windows.

Conclusion: WGA and WPA do nothing to stop piracy but everything to try

and get people to buy licenses they don't need as well as

inconveniencing paying customers while the crackers just laugh all the

way to the bank.

I think you have human rights and personal rights mixed up. Human rights is

about discrimination. Personal rights is about what everyone is allowed to

do based on a set of laws. I don't like DRM in any form but it's hardly a

human rights issue.

I don't see the issues as directly comparable but I can see an argument

could be made that they overlap a bit. The Vista EULA specifically allows

you to make a backup copy. The RIAA is arguing that backup copies of media

content are somehow illegal. The issue of having more than one copy in use

at the same time is where they may overlap. I'm not saying I approve or like

DRM in any way but I do believe a content provider has the right to not

allow two copies of the content to be in use at the same time. I have no

idea how this could be enforced without some kind of DRM. My opinion is that

all current DRM implementations don't work. All content providers should be

looking for a different way to protect their rights. What this "different

way" is I don't know.

Well, it's their software (or music) we only pay to use it. And we pay

under terms of a contract that limits what we can do in return for our

payment. If someone wanted unlimited rights, I'm sure Microsoft (or RIAA)

could come up with a number...

If, on the other hand, one is not willing to pay for unlimited rights, one

can always participate in the Nigerian scam of Ubangi.
