donr09 Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 Okay, I have been asked to change over to Server 2008. The last Microsoft server that I set up was NT or 2000. Once it was setup, I was not allowed to work on that server. That server was upgraded a number of times and is now running Server 2003. So, my question: What are the recommendation for hardware: CPU Board RAM Hard Drive(s) size Ethernet Cards Backup System etc. I have been given so much advice by others that are not really 2008 server techs or not even server techs that there specs seem to conflict. thanks for any input Don Quote
FPCH Admin AWS Posted April 6, 2008 FPCH Admin Posted April 6, 2008 Best advice I can give is to that if Windows 2003 ran on the hardware Windows 2008 will run fine. Unlike going from XP to Vista this is a server OS so you won't be running glass or any of the other effects that are standard with Vista. If anything Winodws 2008 will run better and more efficient on te same hardware as Winodws 2003. Quote Off Topic Forum - Unlike the Rest
donr09 Posted April 6, 2008 Author Posted April 6, 2008 This will be a new install. I don't have a 2003 server. In fact, I am replacing two old Novell servers with this 2008 server. So, I need hardware that will last for a few years. The boss doesn't want anything that will be outdated in a short time, including software and hardware. Thanks Don Quote
FPCH Admin AWS Posted April 6, 2008 FPCH Admin Posted April 6, 2008 First off I'll post with the thought you'll be using the 64bit version of Windows 2008. I would go for an Intel Quad core processor or dual Xeons and use an Intel motherboard. For memory go with 4 gigs unless you'll be running database intensive apps then go with at least 8gigs. Memory of choice for me is GSkill. Use SCSI drives, at least 5, in a raid 10 array for redundancy and best performane. Whatever you company currently uses for backup will work fine. I haven't had any problems with any hardware so if you buy top of the line components you be sure it will last you a long tme. Quote Off Topic Forum - Unlike the Rest
donr09 Posted April 6, 2008 Author Posted April 6, 2008 Sounds somewhat like, I had in mind. I did not have as many hard drives in mind. Thanks for the information. Don Quote
