You should really go to/comprehend what is at the links before you post them

as something they are not. -)

Do you really believe the Microsoft spin doctors and Bill Gates when

they try to explain the price differential? They all give different

explanations.Bill made a right cockup of his explanation when

interviewed on UK TV early in the year.

I deduced it because the latest SP shown in MS download center was

SP2. We've been hearing about SP3 for a long time, and it's always

been either vaporware or some hack's creation.

Then after posting I saw Gerry's link, so it appears part of

Microsoft's site has been updated and part has not -- or else SP3 has

been announced but isn't actually available for download.

As I said when I started a new thread, I was surprised there hadn't

been any discussion here.

As one of those 60% ers, I did /not/ have a choice. My new portable came

pre-installed with Vista (no choice given) - and I refuse to pay more

money to a crooked organisation to have XP re-installed.

Now do you understand?

So, Bob, people should wait for Vista "SP2" before they waste any money

on the new OS. Perhaps by that time Vista will have gone the way of

Windows ME (consigned to the dusbin of software history)

What I don't understand is why you bought the laptop to begin with. It's

not as though one cannot buy a laptop with XP preinstalled. Or, if

you're hip, you'll wipe the drive and install Ubuntu on the laptop. Get

it at http://www.ubuntu.com

SP3 for Vista has been released as RC1 to official BETA testers only and

they have their private newsgroups for discussions, that's why there's been

no discussion about it here. Anyone discussing SP3 here is probably NOT an

official MS Beta tester and so has got the pack "unofficially"....

Unless you were given this portable by your company, OF COURSE you had a

choice. There are still many OEM vendors that will supply you with a machine

with XP on it, you could have got a MAC, and of course there's Linux as

well.

Unless you mean that your favourite computer store didn't give you a choice,

in which case you should have voted with your wallet and gone somewhere that

DID give you a choice...

Stan

My link was a preliminary announcement as to what is to be included in

SP3. It is a draft which may, or may not, be amended when they release

SP3. Copies of SP3 are being Beta tested at the present. Beta testing in

essence is checking for bugs. You may expect the release during the

period January to June 2008.

I hear all the comments - but /you/ do not live in Luxembourg. I have

than the Vista.

Microsoft has just released SP3 RC1 to MSDN subscribers.

Yes, I understand you neither know how to shop for a computer, or what

you are talking about.

Vista is a lot dearer than XP. I can imagine you might have

difficulties. You can probably buy in the UK and have it shipped to

Luxembourg. Shipping charges might cost.

You might see if anything here helps for a future purchase:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=3149601#countries

Many UK suppliers do not supply overseas.

Excellent point. I perform (mainly) only two tasks on my computer I

write (but have not yet sold) short stories and, so far, 3 novels and

that task is no faster now than when I was using 'Wordstar' on a 286

machine. The second one is my hobby, photography, for which I use

Photoshop which I remember used to take a dog's age to perform a

'save' function and now is almost instantaneous with a 2 gig system

and I'm in no hurry to lay out money just so I can say I have a 3 or

4 gig system because I doubt if I'd notice the difference.
