I am trying to use the backup utility that shipped with Windows XP-64

Professional. Windows on this Dell 470 64 bit computer is up to date,

service pack 2. When I try to run a normal backup, I get the following fail

message:

Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1.

Timeout before function completed

While searching through the internet, I read that 32-bit backup programs

running under a 64-bit operating system will not work. Is this true of the

backup utility shipped with my OEM version of Windows?

I was using a 32 bit Windows XP until the hard drive for that system failed.

I installed a new (second) drive and decided to install Vista 64 to take

advantage of the latest operating system on my 64 bit machine. Half my

drivers still don't work plus lots of programs won't work underVista 64.

Am I sentenced to reinstall a 32 bit OS to get backup and devices to work?

Is there a way to make the Backup utility that shipped with Window XP-64

work?

Hello Arthur,

Is that the entire error message or is there more to it?

VSS is not working properly which is preventing backup from working.

Not really a VSS expert but let's try this:

Cd /d %windir%\system32

Regsvr32 ole32.dll

Regsvr32 vss_ps.dll

Vssvc /Register

Regsvr32 /i swprv.dll

Regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll

Then try backing up again

Thanks,
