My DVD RW drive loads by default as E:, the lowest available letter. I

want to use E: for something else, so I assigned it the letter Z:

using Administrative Tools. But on reboot it reverts to E:.

A virtual drive created by the InstantWrite software has the same

problem, i.e. I cannot permanently reassign the drive letter, but

another DVD drive which was earlier assigned to Y: is still Y:.

I can successfully reassign the drive letters of the various hard disk

partitions. They do not revert on reboot.

I have just reinstalled my whole system. I had the problem before

reinstallation, but as far as I can recall it was not there at first

in the new installation. It is now.

TIA for any help.

Hi Rob

Are you perhaps using Zone Alarm? This was a known problem in version

6.5.x.x I'm not sure about later ones. If you think this might apply to

you, have a look here:

It's a known problem with ZoneAlarm 6.5. Norton GoBack is also

suspected to cause this.

Apparently ZA 6.5.737 fixed the problem. I was able to change my dvd

drive letter and after rebooting, the new drive letter was showing

correctly.

Thanks for the info!

Yes, ZA, it was, though I was using version 7. I removed it from the

startup directory, but that was not enough. I uninstalled it and my

drives are not reverting.

So, what is a good alternative free firewall?

Thanks all.

Well, now that your drives are like you want them, may I recommend ZA.

Reinstall it and it should be happy. :)
