I used to have a little bit of respect for you. Back in the day in the XP

newsgroup you occasionally helped people and often had constructive

criticism of Microsoft. Even when we disagreed I felt a dialogue was still

possible and sometimes enjoyed debating you. Since Vista has been released

you have settled into a troll like stance where debate with you is not

possible. I don't know what changed in your life but please take a bit of

friendly advice. Lighten up, enjoy life a little, and don't worry so much

about who is using what OS. Ubuntu is a decent enough distro of Linux for a

beginner. Personally I prefer other distros but I am starting to appreciate

Ubuntu Feisty. That said it's just an OS. It has problems and flaws just

like any other complex computer program. It is not an alternative for most

home users of Windows. When they have a problem there are fewer experts

around to help them. Very few professional computer techs know anything

about it. Those that do probably don't work on home computers. This is

changing but that's currently the way it is. You would be better off trying

to get Windows users to switch to a Mac. A least then they would have a

chance at decent local support.

I think some of the confusion amongst Windows users on this question is that

Windows does have a firewall ... an actual application that can be

installed or may come installed by default, depending on the version of

Windows and can be turned on or off. Ubuntu doesn't have such an

application installed by default, as Linux doesn't use an application to

give one a "firewall". Linux, by design, is a firewall. All ports are

closed unless one specifically opens a service that then opens a port to

the outside world. This is controlled by iptable rules. There are frontends

to iptables that are apps one can install in Linux that gives one a GUI way

to write iptable rules. But they in themselves aren't a firewall in the

sense one is familiar with in Windows.

 

To say "a firewall is automatically installed when you install Ubuntu" is

not technically correct and leaves Windows users to say that Windows does

the same. They are not at all the same. A Linux box doesn't need

a "firewall". If you run services that open specific ports that you don't

want the outside world to be able to access and just be accessible within

your LAN, then you can set iptable rules to block outside access. But there

are other ways with most services to configure them individually to do the

same, or use hosts.allow and hosts.deny to lock down some of the ports some

services use. A NAT router is really all one needs to offer intrusion

protection within a Linux based LAN.

Spirit, really there's no argument. Linux is indeed more secure than

Windows. Why do you think that Microsoft developed UAC, if it isn't an

effort to try and lock down the kernel space from the user space which is

what Linux has had all along? Hopefully, Microsoft will succeed with making

Windows more secure than its been by implementing UAC. It's unfortunate

that it annoys end-users so they can simply turn it off, essentially

defeating Microsoft's intentions.

I don't suppose you know where the name "rootkit" came from? Well,

if you know Unix, you probably can guess that the root in root kit comes

from the Unix world, since that is where the first root kit was discovered.

So, no, switching will not prevent you from getting rootkits.

Wow, there's a remote possibility that a root kit that was written in

1998 might take over a Linux machine. It's also possible that someone

could take your machine by sticking a gun in your face.

 

Fact: No one has shown one case where a Linux box has been compromised.

 

Fact: Windows boxes not only get compromised, they are turned into

herd-bots and get compromised every single second of the day.

I can just see whoever allowing us to open up a driver file for a two year

old product and remove the part where is says 'XP only'.. or removing the OS

specific identifier for a program that allows the burning of CDs.. far

better we look online or on the racks of our favorite retailer for 'new'

stuff..

It seems you have a problem with Frank and yet you use what he does as

a standard for your own behavior.

Neither of you have reason to be outraged at the other since you both

stoop so low.

Right now you both can look in a mirror and see each other as

Perhaps you should set a higher standard than those who do what you

detest.

No double standard, it seems you are the one going lower to meet that

all.

However some may choose to omit that fact in their zeal to find a non
