The kids referred to are Nigerian and live in Nigeria. Maybe if you read

the article referenced ... it would still be in this post but because

you top post and use a sig delimiter, T-Bird nukes your sig and

everything below it as do most news readers not created by Microsoft.

Where do you think you are, in a high school boys' locker room with Frank?

You have to take these things a case at a time. Chessmaster 10 was not Vista

compatible, but Chessmaster 11 is.. take it up with them.

So how do you like Compiz-Fusion. Has it increased your productivity in

AbiWord yet?

Hundreds??? That was all!!?? Wow...let me bow to your "superiority".

No, when Microsoft expects me to shell out 400 bucks for Vista Ultimate,

which is more than twice as expensive as XP Professional, then I in turn

expect my software to work. Period. I'm not moving from one OS to

another, I am upgrading from one version of the same OS to another. How

or why it does, I honestly don't give a crap.

While the above may not be all that feasible under certain hardware

conditions, such as moving from 16-bit to 32-bit....XP to Vista is no

such change. Same hardware, just different version OS. So yes, I expect

things to just work.

My expectations are simply a little higher than that of the average

fanboy.

Apparently you feel Nigerian kids are incapable of learning.

Nationality is irrelevant.

The same applies to people everywhere, Nigeria, Spain etc.

No matter what they have they will need to learn how to use it.

I feel Nigerians as well as anyone else can learn to safely use what

is given to them.

"it would still be in this post"

FALSE.

I trimmed all but your last post so as to not quote excessively.

I also forgot that you were referring to Nigerian kids even though I

had previously read it.

But that is an irrelevant point since they are capable of learning as

well.

Now, do you have to continue to complain about irrelevant posting

styles, or can you keep to the issues?

I was actually half joking JJ. Even though there are many things I

"when Microsoft expects me to shell out 400 bucks for Vista Ultimate"

No one had any such expectation.

Everyone decides for themselves their needs.

Similar to any product from any manufacturer.

"then I in turn expect my software to work"

An incorrect expectation.

There is no reason to expect most programs to perform better with

Windows Vista Ultimate than other less expensive versions of Windows

Vista.

The same applied when Windows XP came out 6 years ago.

If you purchased Windows Vista Ultimate, it was a choice you made.

Vista Ultimate like Home Basic have no comparisons in Windows XP.

If you were replacing Windows XP Pro, the closest is Windows Vista

Business and that is perhaps what you wanted.

Around here Home Premium is similar priced to XP Home while XP

Professional is similar to Vista Business.

If you chose to further upgrade to Ultimate, you should expect to pay

more.

If your programs do not work, perhaps you should return Windows Vista

if possible and you have not had it to long.

"is the most sensitive"

And I see those who are insecure and have no control that they

regularly need to resort to insults, name calling and other personal

attacks as fitting best in that group.

And obviously there are a few on both sides that regularly display

that insecurity.

Business though has no significant multimedia support right? Which XP Pro

does. So there, that would make business an unsuitable replacement.

That said, I also don't like buying castrated operating systems that are

missing features.

I'm a programmer, I ultimately need to have Vista around as I need to

support it.

And ultimately, everyone else is going to be in the same boat. They'll

end up needing to buy a new PC and be stuck with vista due to no XP

drivers. Or they'll need to switch to vista because of software they need

that is now Vista only.

And that is then where the fun starts. Where now one is dealing with the

problem where they have things that don't work that in my opinion should.

I expect a company like Microsoft to simply to do better.

If an OS like Linux can do better, why can't Microsoft? Upgrading from

any version of Ubuntu to next does not break any of my software nor does

it break any of my hardware support. Why can't Microsoft do this?

I mean Microsoft actually DOES do this, with some things. They do it with

DirectX. DX7 didn't break DX6. DX8 didn't break DX7. DX9 didn't break

DX8. DX10 doesn't break DX9. Why? Because they just implemented each

version as a new API.

So if they want to clean up windows, why not do it the same thing? Why

not simply leave the win32 API as it is and ensure all existing

applications will continue to work with it and create a new API to use

for new Vista software. Personally I'd actually welcome Microsoft

creating a new API rather than continuously mucking around in the Win32

API and breaking compatibility all over the place. Such a concept would

ensure compatibility while simultaneously giving a fresh start.

That's essentially how Linux operates and it works exceedingly well from

my experiences so far.

So unlike a lot of people, I can understand why the compatibility

problems exist in vista and what the reasons are. But just because I am

capable of understand it does not mean I have to agree with it or like

it. Especially not when I personally know that it could be done better.

But try explaining this to the average person that doesn't, nor likely

will, understand why their software and hardware won't work. The only

understand that it doesn't work and that they now need to pay for new

things the ultimately didn't actually need. The need is artificially

created by a lack of compatibility.

Perhaps mandriva isn't covered by the gpl? and all those that have already

downloaded it free are criminals?

Maybe someone is scamming the Nigerians?

"explaining this to the average person"

But who is the average person?

The average person probably purchases a system with the installed

operating system therefore much of the compatibility you refer is

nonexistent.

They may have some hardware and software issues but not to the extent

as those that upgrade from one OS to another.

Those that upgrade instead are above average and should be aware of

the potential pitfalls of an upgrade.

People need to learn and it can be explained to them when necessary.

"The need is artificially created by a lack of compatibility"

Not always.

It is not near that simplistic.

Sometimes it is because of poorly written programs as well as

countless other reasons.

Like any other product change, people need to learn the differences

and affects.

And if that is done in advance, all the better.

The information on compatibility is already widely available.

Why do people purchase without checking?

Why do sales people not help the customer verify they are ready for

the upgrade?

Similar answers apply to just about any type of product from any

source.
