Windows update is killing VISTA....please help

I have now read many forums to try to solve this problem....with no luck.

After a brand new clean (but painful) install of Vista home premium update

has been a big problem. Note here I'm not getting any error messages. Boot up

is now very slow and when I use Windows update the whole system slows down to

an unusable speed. My system is 2 Ghz Core 2 Duo, 1 GIG RAM (667mhz), Asus

Mboard. System also craches if I try to open Media Center (which is why I

installed Vista...)! System runs like a dream (excluding media center) as

long as I go into "services" and stop the update service completely. I think

maybe the problem with Media Center is that it restarts the Update service. I

have downloaded most of the undates sucessfully, but it took around 7 hours

(my other PC on the same connection did it in about 10 minutes). I really

want to use Media Center and can handle not having access to updates if

necessary. Can anybody help me please..??
