trying to install Ubuntu 7.10 in a VMWare virtual machine. And I am still

only at 59%.

Heck, Vista installed in 32 minutes under VMWare.

No problems here, and I used the Upgrade Install Method, I have not yet

tried it in a Virtual Machine however, just fyi.

Yeah...no problems here either. I just installed it on a Hotpoint

refrigerator in 1 minute, and a Corby trouser press in just under 20

seconds. Yet to try it on a Virtual Machine though! -)

Your lucky..

it won't install on my Sony Vaio pcg fx101.

there is some possibility that the alternative install disk might work.

I have just realized why Alias has been so quiet today.. he is buying

hardware that will support Glutinous Gibbon c/w Compiz-Fusion.. Ooops, there

goes the S3 Virge video card.. adios..

Finally installed. 2 hours and 50 minutes from initial boot to desktop. WOW!

Windows XP installs in VMWare Workstation in 35 minutes. Vista installs in

23 minutes. Both XP and Vista start out in the initial VMWare window and the

window enlarges *once* to its final resolution. Ubuntu starts out small,

then goes to larger than the size of my 20 inch monitor - then it is again

reduced to the final resolution. The same 3 changes upon shutdown.

So far I am not impressed!

There is another release coming out in the next six months, try that one

then and see if it works.

Is it a six month release cycle because it takes that long to produce a

windows manager?

Its about the only difference that I noticed between 7.04 and 7.10 other

than the inability to install it on my vaio.

I was busy yesterday and I have not downloaded Gutsy but I do have

three machines that can run it, two with a nVidia 256MB video card and

on the other a nVidia PCE 512MB card. That said, I don't plan to

install it until the CDs I ordered arrive, giving the development team

time to patch any last minute bugs. I didn't rush to upgrade to Feisty

or XP for that matter.

Missed me, eh?

Alias

If anything, the images on the server are more likely to be versions where

'last minute bugs' have been fixed. Why wait for CDs, unless of course you

are on dialup?

We missed your expertise in Ubuntu.

Just as well some of the MVPs knew enough to fix things in your absence.

The story so far in case you have missed it..

Ubuntu 7.10 will not install on my basic Vaio fx101 as 256M RAM isn't enough

even though it is running XP pro.

It doesn't tell you it can't install it just hangs for hours.

Ubuntu 7.10 or 7.04 will not install in a VPC unless you do some hacking

using nano to get the config files in a workable state.

Be very careful when you install Ubuntu 7.10 as the warning messages given

after the partitioning phase are identical whether if it is going to delete

your existing partitions or leave them intact (nice bit of thought went into

that I see, not only cryptic but identical for different actions).

Be 101% certain that you choose use free space if that is your intent as you

*cannot* tell once you have passed that screen and Ubuntu will quite happily

remove everything. Where do you report bugs in Ubuntu because that is one

hell of a bug for an OS installer.

Once you have Ubuntu 7.10 installed you will be disappointed.. it has no new

applications, just a few bells and whistles, a lot of bug fixes and a lot of

new bugs. Overall wait for the next servi^W release and patch the bugs in

what you already have is my advice.

Which is why I am waiting and not rushing in. I don't do VPC so I

can't comment on that.

Gutsy work fine with a Siluro 64mg card for me.

Waiting another 6 months? Why not install it now and pick up the bug fixes

on the fly?

The original Linux distros were lean, mean and did the job. No fancy stuff,

and just a command line interface. The more that some distros try to look

and work like Windows, the more bogged down and bug ridden they will become.

They will still be free of course, but who wants yesterdays look even if it

is free.

For Ubuntu and similar to become what Windows is, they have to find a way

around the 'techie' image, and produce something that is mindlessly simple

and is 100% compatible with Windows.

I am mildly amused that you are waiting for a bug free Ubuntu. Is this not a

scenario unlike what you claim is so bad about Vista, an OS way more

polished and compatible than Gutsy Gibbon will ever be.

It would appear that GG is FF with a fancy, but most likely counter

productive, revolving cube. All very good for graphics demos, but of little

practical use, and much like the up and coming 360 desktop for Windows. Who

will want 30km of desktop space? The user will be spending untold time

looking for stuff on a cube or a never ending desktop, eventually turning

the facility off.

We want to do real work, not all of this play stuff. If the only reason to

have GG is the Compiz_Fusion sandbox, or people only get Vista for

Dreamscene, another novel but essentially useless graphics Demo, then real

work is over. Time to play.. :-)

I don't install *any* OS until awhile after the initial release. I

waited until 03 for XP, for example. Have YOU installed Gutsy yet?

Feisty Fawn looks better than Vista. Ubuntu is tomorrow's look. Vista

is the Win Me of NT. Live with it.

No, Windows has to become 100% compatible with Linux if it plans to

stay around.

Your unfounded opinion. I always order the CD and then install Ubuntu.

If you've got a problem with that, tough.

I have the four desktop cube with FF and Beryl.

Frankly, I have only used two desktops simultaneously.

The cube comes in handy if you like to maximize your apps when doing

real work. Another advantage is not needing expensive programs like

Office. Of course, we can't forget the fact that Ubuntu is practically

bullet proof when confronted with viruses and malware, especially when

compared to Windows. Not only that, one doesn't have to prove one's a

not a thief over and over and over again like one has to do with

Vista. In addition, Ubuntu updates update the OS and all the programs

you've installed from the repository which is very convenient.

You must be running VMWare under Fista. That would probably account for how

slow it's running. Fista is such a bloated p.o.s. "operating system", that

it is using up so much of your computer resources, there's hardly enough

left for the VM.

Cheers.

Do you use Linux? Everytime you "google", you're using Linux.

You miss all of the fun part by not installing when first released. I would

have thought that a Linux user of your caliber would want to get it asap.

You might even be able to help iron out some of the bugs

I will indeed install GG as soon as the server co-operates and releases the

download at a reasonable speed.

FF doesn't look better in my opinion, but looks are subjective anyway.

Yes, some like to think that Vista is the new ME.. Some of it is wishful

thinking.

Windows has to be compatible with Linux to survive? You spend too much time

in isolation. Get out more.. :-)

Re waiting for CDs, refer to my opening comment..

Desktop gimmicks have invariably proved themselves to be counter productive

regardless of source..

I use two displays.. less problematic than a spinning cube or endless road..

Minimizing apps while doing real work? How do you manage real work if the

apps required to do it are minimized?

You will have to explain further why you think that the cube or any other

graphical toy can replace MS Office/Open Office etc.

Linux can be a carrier of virus'. How do you ensure that yours isn't, other

than not installing it until a bug free version appears?

Strangely, MS operating systems also update automatically. It is the new way

of keeping an OS up to date. Cool, yes?

WGA and WPA adversely affect few users in reality, and many people would

wonder why you harp on about them so much.

You show little faith in Ubuntu, which is not a good ad for it. If the only

real good thing is being free, Ubuntu will not take over from anything other

than its own previous versions. It also faces stiff competition from other

strains of Linux.

Your call to mindlessly switch to Ubuntu fails to address the very real

migration problems that moving from one platform to another presents. It is

an area that you just shrug off with 'there are equivalents'. Sorry but that

is not good enough.

Whether migrating from Windows to Linux or the other way around, there are

issues that go way beyond 'oh well, it should have worked because I think

that A is better than B'.

Please show due consideration to the people looking for answers here. It is

not about personal preferences. It is responding to the call to help, not

make things more complicated or worse.

I thought you knew.. most open source applications do run on windows so it

is compatible.

I would like to see you name any useful open source applications that

aren't.
