Shared drive on server freezes or locks workstations

When connected to a shared folder on a Server 2008 server, the shared folder will lock or freeze up all the workstations that are logged in to that shared folder. The problem is not consistent as to when it will happen.

So the question is: Should I look for a faulty workstation (nic, cable, etc.)?, Nic on the server, cable , etc.? Switch?, Workstation not associated with the server at all? Software that is running on the server?

This problem has me and the main user and her staff completely puzzled.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I put this in this forum, because I am not sure if it is a network issue or not?

Look at the network connection on the server and at the router/switch on the network. It could be going down intermittently causing the problem.
