Despite being impressed with Ubuntu 7.10 there are many things that

leave me unable to adopt it as a replacement for Vista:

 

Hardware: Canon MF4150 scan/print, Kworld TV Tuner/remote support,

Highpoint 2240 Raid support, odd 1440*900 monitor support, and other

minor items...

 

Software: Taxcut/Turbotax, functionally equivalent WMP11 replacement

(discussed in separate threads) ...

 

I'm made more nervous by the attitude I see in many Linux fans that

drivers provided for the restricted driver manager are somehow provided

by IHVs that haven't yet got the free/open source religion and they will

come over from the dark side eventually, rather than accepting that it's

perfectly reasonable for an IHV to adopt the model of providing and

supporting their own proprietary code.

 

Similar attitudes exist for ISVs that don't give away their intellectual

property.

 

Free stuff is nice. But the platform should be there to enable the

function that users are willing to pay for.

 

I'll still keep an eye on the Ubuntu releases and limit myself to moving

more towards open interfaces, where the choice exists and doesn't cause

any serious penalties, to prepare for the day when the above are addressed.

the os is ahead of the hardware,,if anything anything that worked in win xp

and is only old up to a few years,should of worked with no problem.the os is

2006..newer then the hardware..and its microsoft,thats telling sony and

nero..that they cant just give us a simple upgraded software,so the

hardware.will work with vista,micorsoft told them..to let us have the

software for free,they had to make us down load the bloated

verson..100mb.thats not right..and its the same thing,,with my

powercolor/radeon..vga card.microsoft is telling them the same thing..for

free,,its got to be 100mb..i did not down load either..

 

im thinking,,microsoft told them pay us a fee.or make the customer,download

a 100 mb upgrade program..i dont need the free upgrade in every language in

the world..

 

dont say is not true..i talked to the lady at sony..through email..she said

this was what microsoft,,was makeing them do..its a deal that they made..i

think 240.00 for vista was enough..they should of been happy with that money..
