naming and renaming photo files

Hello,

I have loads of photos on my computer in a separate D drive which are backed

up to external hard drives. These all have names and many have meta data.

Suddenly for no apparent reason at all some of my photos disappeared and the

disapperance was unfortunately backed up.

I have restored the files but I now have a problem in naming and renaming

the restored files. Whereas I previously could name them as I liked, I now am

not allowed to give names other than very short ones and existing names have

been truncated. I cannot find a way around this and have no idea why it

happened.

I am also finding in Photoshop that some files will not rename and I am

being told that the path cannot be found. Nor will they copy.

Hoping someone can help.
