Windows 10 machine (1709) see CDs. When I insert a CD and try to open it, the computer opens the drawer and says to insert a disk.

I tried another(known good) optical drive - same issue. I tried several CDs - same issue.

Device Manager - looks good.

Remember the Upper Filter issue from years ago? It was like that. Although the Upper Filter issue was fixed in 2016 in Windows 10, I removed the registry value anyway. Still no joy. Problem persisted in Safe Mode.

Any thoughts?

Thanks plodr. That's funny, my customer brought me that same article.

That article doesn't pertain because the device is seen by Windows and the Device Manager says it's good.

Have you tried a different drive and or that drive in a different system to see if it works there?

Have you tried booting from it? This may tell you it it may be an OS issue or Drive.

"Confucius could give answer to that... unfortunately Confucius not here at moment."

I hadn't thought of trying to boot from it. Good idea.

I know the drive works because I ended up connecting the optical drive via a USB adapter to the same computer. In that situation, everything worked nicely.

I thought it may have been the SATA cable inside the computer. However, I was able to uninstall the optical drive in Device Manager. When I restarted, the computer loaded the driver. That tells me the SATA data cable is good. I should have tried another cable anyway.
