N3 Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 What are the advantages/disadvantages of "Linux Mint" compared to windows 7 or 10? Quote
FPCH Staff Tony D Posted February 3, 2018 FPCH Staff Posted February 3, 2018 (edited) Advantages: For one, it's free. For two, no forced updates For three, you don't have to install it. It can be run from a DVD or USB drive. Edited February 3, 2018 by Tony D 1 Quote
FPCH Admin AWS Posted February 3, 2018 FPCH Admin Posted February 3, 2018 It is much faster. Has a smaller footprint. Takes less resources to run. 1 Quote Off Topic Forum - Unlike the Rest
N3 Posted February 3, 2018 Author Posted February 3, 2018 1. Can I still use my printer & webcam? 2. I have an older computer with windows 7, 64 bit installed. Can I uninstall windows & use Linux Mint? 3. I use Paltalk & Skype. Will Linux mint accept those? Quote
plodr Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 Use it live from a USB stick BEFORE you decide if you actually want to install it. I always test distros on sticks. 4 Quote
FPCH Admin AWS Posted February 3, 2018 FPCH Admin Posted February 3, 2018 Yes to all. In fact I would bet you will be pleasantly surprised at how well it will work. 1 Quote Off Topic Forum - Unlike the Rest
starbuck Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 In fact I would bet you will be pleasantly surprised at how well it will work.Completely agree. Installed Mint a few months ago on an old system..... and it's a dream to use. If you select the updates... they take no time at all to download and install. One thing that no one has mentioned..... It's a lot more secure than Windows. I haven't seen a need to install any type of AV etc.... all I enabled was the Firewall. 4 Quote
IJAC Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 I just recently reinstalled Linux Mint on another hard drive so I can dual boot I really like it also very user friendly. I was having some problems in windows but when I went to Mint I did not have those problems so it in a way helped me diagnose the problem. In also like the live Linux disks or USB that you can boot to and rescue files from windows if need be. 2 Quote
N3 Posted February 28, 2018 Author Posted February 28, 2018 I went to the "Paltalk Help Lobby" & they stated that paltalk will not operate using Linux. This appears to be my only disappointment with Linux. Other than the above it appears to be an excellent operating system. Thanks to everybody for your input. 1 Quote
FPCH Staff Tony D Posted February 28, 2018 FPCH Staff Posted February 28, 2018 I also found an unused machine and installed Mint. So far, so good. 1 Quote
