FPCH Staff Tony D Posted November 16, 2016 FPCH Staff Posted November 16, 2016 Before I reformat and reload, I thought I'd ask for a second, or third, or forth, etc. opinion. I'm working with a Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit HP laptop. 8 GB RAM. User complained that MS Word (Home and Student 2007) no longer works. Gets corrupted error 1719 I've also found so far PowerPoint and Excel don’t open Can’t open Power Options Control Panel Unable to remove user password. Unable to get Computer Properties. Unable to Personalize Display: Explorer.EXE Server execution failed. Can't create recovery disk: HPRDC: Unable to Initialize IDiscMaster2 – Error 0x80080154 System Restores didn't complete successfully. When I ran it under Windows, it returned an unspecified error. When I ran it using F8 while booting and choosing Repair, it returned 0x800700b7. But then after it booted, it said System Restore was successful. I should have checked System this morning before starting the chkdsk /r that I'm running right now. So before I reload, any thoughts? Quote

FPCH Staff Tony D Posted November 16, 2016 Author FPCH Staff Posted November 16, 2016 Thanks for the help. Both good ideas. I think corruption somewhere. chkdsk found no errors. Let me try your suggestions. btw: I can't even create a new user. Quote
DSTM Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 Are you running with full Admin permissions? Tony. FPCH Staff Tony D Posted November 16, 2016 Author FPCH Staff Posted November 16, 2016 Not sure what you mean my that. Please explain. The account I'm running from is an administrator account. Once sfc /scannow is complete, I'm going to try and unhide the Administrator account, log into it via Safe Mode and try to create a new user profile. Quote
FPCH Staff Tony D Posted November 16, 2016 Author FPCH Staff Posted November 16, 2016 sfc /scannow found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Using the Administrator account, I'm seeing the same symptoms. It's ready for a wipe and load. Quote
DSTM Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 Not sure what you mean my that. Please explain. The account I'm running from is an administrator account. This is what I was referring to. FPCH Staff Tony D Posted November 17, 2016 Author FPCH Staff Posted November 17, 2016 Thanks, Yes, I had to enable the Administrator account. Using that account, I tried to create a new user. No joy. I'm just finishing with reloading Windows right now. It was fun. Cindy and Dougie - thanks for helping out. 1 Quote

FPCH Staff Tony D Posted November 17, 2016 Author FPCH Staff Posted November 17, 2016 Wish I knew what happened to this machine. The guy is not a heavy user. He had less than a GB of data to backup. No strange software. MBAM found only one PUP. Note: The only protection he had was Windows Defender. However, I don't think it was malware that took it out. He thinks it happened after an update. We've seen that before, but I haven't heard any reports of updates taking out a machine lately. It just got corrupted somehow. Quote
FPCH Admin allheart55 Cindy E Posted November 17, 2016 FPCH Admin Posted November 17, 2016 Did he have any type of registry cleaner or computer optimizer software on board Tony? FPCH Staff Tony D Posted November 17, 2016 Author FPCH Staff Posted November 17, 2016 Nope, none of those. It was very clean. btw: I did a manual Windows update last night. I let it continue checking for updates over night. When I got back to it this morning, it had gone to sleep. Woke it up and saw that it was still checking for updates. Any idea when it'll start updating? I hardly every run into this because I hardly every have to reload Windows. Quote
FPCH Admin allheart55 Cindy E Posted November 17, 2016 FPCH Admin Posted November 17, 2016 Windows updates especially for Win 7 are a mess. I always go with the MS update roll up for convenience and to keep my sanity. You can find it here at the MS Update Catalog. Windows 7 SP1 and Server 2008 R2 SP1 convenience roll-up now available at a download location near you! FPCH Staff Tony D Posted November 17, 2016 Author FPCH Staff Posted November 17, 2016 Thanks, I updated to IE 11 and a page came up "Install free antivirus from Microsoft and enable recommended settings". This is the first I've seen this page. Quote

FPCH Staff Tony D Posted November 17, 2016 Author FPCH Staff Posted November 17, 2016 I'm running the Roll up for convenience update. Didn't expect it to take this long searching for updates. Wish MS would make updating easier. Quote
