Microsoft: Windows 10 upgrades will cost $119 starting July 30th

Microsoft is reminding everyone today that the free promotion for Windows 10 upgrades is finishing soon. The software maker first released Windows 10 as a free upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 machines on July 29th last year, giving everyone a year to upgrade at no cost. Many had assumed Microsoft would keep the free upgrade rolling past the year cut off, but it appears the company is sticking to its original promise.

In an announcement of 300 million Windows 10 users, Microsoft has started driving awareness of the July 29th date. "Time is running out," says Yusuf Mehdi, who heads up Microsoft's Windows and devices marketing efforts. "The free upgrade offer will end on July 29th and we want to make sure you don’t miss out." After July 29th, Microsoft says you'll need to purchase a full version of Windows 10 Home for $119 or get Windows 10 on a new machine.

Windows 10 has proved popular, especially with 300 million machines now running it, but the company wants one billion devices using the software within the next two years. Reminding people that they only have two months left to upgrade free of charge is one way of driving upgrade numbers, but opting to extend the promotion could also have similar results. It's hardly surprising that Microsoft is sticking to its original plans, but there's still time left for the company to change its mind.

What are techs telling their customers to do?

 

If they're on W7, I tell them to stay with it if they like it. Support ends Jan 2020. By then they'll need a new machine anyway.

 

If they're on W8, or W8.1, I tell them to upgrade now.

That is pretty much what I have been telling my people.

I have upgraded quite a few of them from 7 to 10 and many of them had me revert it after a couple of weeks.

Most of the people that upgraded from 8.1 to 10 have liked it.

The others are dealing with it.

I just finished upgrading all the computer and laptops at work to Windows 10. I was going to stay with Windows 7 at first. I had some software that was a little quirky on Windows 10 and figured I'd stay on Windows 7. I upgraded my laptop a couple months ago to Windows 10 and have figured out what the problem was with the software and how to fix it. I decided it was cost effective to upgrade to Windows 10 which is supposed to follow the Apple plan which is free upgrades. If I stayed with Windows 10 I'd have to eventually buy licenses for it. Might as well milk the cow for free while we can.

Just like Tony I tell my friends and customers that they will be fine with Win 7 until 2020. I've had three or four in the last few weeks that have brought brand new computers with Win 10 installed, and they've asked me to install Win 7 before they've even taken their new machine out of the box. One of my best mates who runs a motorcycle repair shop gave me the company credit card the other day and asked me to go to PC World and buy him a laptop, and not to deliver it to him until I'd done a clean install of Win 7.

As for my own office, I think I'll stick with 7 for another three or four years as well.

I have Windows 10 insider preview 14316 on this computer (Dual Boot) and seldom ever boot to it.

Like Frank, I am comfortable with Windows 7 SP1 Ultra, and will continue to use it as my preferred working OS.

Everything I need to do, Windows7 SP1 does it to my satisfaction.:)

I also have Windows 10 but on a separate computer. I rarely use it.

I have always been an early adopter of all new operating systems.

Not so with Windows 10.

My main box is Window 7 but I do have Windows 8.1 on another machine.
