Microsoft rolled out Windows 10 update KB3140741 to provide stability improvements for the servicing stack on computers running version 1511, but it appears that a number of PCs are actually experiencing some issues after installing the patch.

The company hasn’t publicly acknowledged the experienced problems, but we’ve seen isolated reports of issues that appeared after this latest update was installed.

Our reader Jean Ward told us on Twitter that, after installing update KB3140741, the Start menu stopped working completely, with the only workaround said to be the complete removing (and eventually the hiding) of the update to avoid being offered once again.

There are also a few reports on Microsoft’s Community forums where users describe the issues they came across after installing update KB3140741 on their computers, including these Start menu problems that were also experienced in the past with other patches.

KB3140741 also said to remove some files from the desktop

One user claimed that KB3140741 removed all files from his desktop and library folders and had to perform a full restore to recover his data.

When I turned on the PC it went into auto update, when it had finished came to my login desktop, had lost all files etc saved to the desktop and also My Microsoft Office software was no present on system came up to register the product along with Google Chrome and my saved Favorites etc.

I therefore had lost all my email history, excel files etc etc.

There was nothing in my downloads files nor my pictures, documents or music. Nothing at all,” he explains.

If you’re also experiencing problems after installing the update, you can try to remove the patch and see if the issues persist after that.

To remove an update, open Control Panel >> Programs >> Programs and Features >> Installed Updates and look for KB3140741 in the list.

Right-click it and hit uninstall and you should be good to go.

We all knew that these mandatory updates were going to begin to cause Windows 10 users some problems.

It was only a matter of time.......

The only answer I can find for that, is:

There is a troubleshooter available that provides a user interface for hiding and showing Windows Updates and drivers.

It was designed for Windows 10 Insider Preview.... but would be worth a shot.

When you click on the download link, you will be prompted to open or save wushowhide.diagcab.

“Show or hide updates” troubleshooter

Opening wushowhide.diagcab will launch the troubleshooter.

Then click Next to proceed and follow the instructions provided by the troubleshooter to hide the problematic driver or update.
