Posted January 31, 20169 yr I am not sure which OS is on this unit so I am assuming it's windows 8. I want to load a linux disc to attempt a data recovery but I don't know how to enable the legacy boot option to boot from USB optical drive? The down arrow will stop at Network Adapter in the UEFI Boot Order. I have attached a screenshot of the BIOS, help please?
January 31, 20169 yr FPCH Admin Mike, Check Figures 8, 9 and 10 here ~I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.~~~Robert McCloskey~~
January 31, 20169 yr Author Thanks. In Legacy Boot Order I select USB CD/DVD option as 1st screenshot shows, F10 to save exit and restart then go to the boot menu where I choose the USB CD/DVD option [2nd screenshot] press Enter, system restarts but then shows "No bootable device....", what can I be doing wrong?
January 31, 20169 yr FPCH Admin Do you have a USB optical drive plugged into the laptop, Mike? ~I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.~~~Robert McCloskey~~
January 31, 20169 yr FPCH Admin Do you have a bootable Linux disc loaded in the optical drive? Can you access the Windows desktop at all? ~I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.~~~Robert McCloskey~~
January 31, 20169 yr FPCH Admin It would be a lot easier to strap the drive to a working computer and pull the files off that way. TBH, that is what I always do. It is a lot quicker as well. ~I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.~~~Robert McCloskey~~
January 31, 20169 yr Author I always do the same but this small unit is too finicky for me to open risking damage. When I power on, first screen shows "Automatic repair" then 2nd screen shows Diagnosing your pc, shouldn't there be an option somewhere to repair windows instead of recovery?
January 31, 20169 yr FPCH Admin Look for Advanced Options in one of those windows that come up. Repair Windows will be there. ~I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.~~~Robert McCloskey~~
January 31, 20169 yr Author No window appears, on the HP screen when I power on, first screen shows "Automatic repair" then 2nd screen shows Diagnosing your pc and it's stuck there so I need to find a way to get to the Advanced screen
January 31, 20169 yr FPCH Admin How long of a time have you allowed the Diagnosing your pc to run? In rare cases, I have seen it go longer than an hour. ~I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.~~~Robert McCloskey~~
January 31, 20169 yr FPCH Admin I would definitely give it more time and see what happens, Mike. ~I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.~~~Robert McCloskey~~
February 1, 20169 yr Author I got it done by using Fatdog64 on a bootable flash drive, works similar to puppy linux.
February 1, 20169 yr FPCH Admin Thanks for letting us know, Mike. (I assume the repair never completed.) ~I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.~~~Robert McCloskey~~
February 1, 20169 yr Author I didn't wait to see. This unit belongs to a businessman who had all of his docs on there and I only had until tomorrow morning to get it done.
February 1, 20169 yr FPCH Admin It happens. I hate it when I run out of time. ~I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.~~~Robert McCloskey~~
