Last week Microsoft updated everyone on the future of the Windows Insider Program but I think there was so much commotion about free Windows 10 that it got lost in the mix.

So leaving the entire free or not free discussion set aside lets focus on the Insider program changes that Microsoft is planning.

As you know, nearly four million people have been involved in the testing of Windows 10 since last year as part of the Windows Insider program. That feedback and telemetry has helped shape the features and functionality of Windows 10.

Now Windows 10 Mobile will still be in development after Windows 10 is released for desktops, PC's and other devices such as tablets so the Windows Insider Program will continue for that.

In fact, mobile should begin to get a lot more attention once Windows 10 hits RTM on the other devices.

What happens on the desktop side after 29 July and the release of Windows 10?

Well Microsoft intends to continue the Insider Program and release updated builds of the desktop operating system so they can get feedback on new features and updates before they get pushed to the broader audience of Windows 10 users.

It is just like the current flighting of builds to Fast and Slow Ring Insiders. Test builds will hit post RTM Insiders Windows 10 installs and then once feedback is collected and implemented it gets pushed to all Windows 10 users.

That is why they are requiring Insiders to use Windows 10 with the Microsoft Account they used to register for the program to validate their system as being eligible for the test builds. It is an easy way to identify participants and set their systems up for receiving the updates.
