If you belong to several groups on Facebook, notifications can get annoying incredibly fast.

When you join a new group on Facebook, you're automatically subscribed to all notifications by default. That means your notifications feed can end up being littered with unnecessary alerts every time someone posts something to that group. That's exactly the problem iMore reader Katelin recently ran into:

I am a member of a few groups on Facebook. I find them useful, but I don't need to receive notifications on my iPhone or see information in my news feed every single time someone makes a post. How do I stop this?

I feel your pain and had the same problem with Facebook groups a while back. Luckily, Facebook was kind enough to give you an option to disable these annoying behaviors. You just have to know where to look.

What Katelin is asking about is actually a two-part issue. If you don't want notifications from groups and don't want random posts from those groups showing up in your news feed, you'll have to disable notifications and unfollow that group.

Unfollowing on Facebook is different than leaving a group or deleting a friend. When you unfollow a person or group, it just means that their posts will no longer appear in your news feed. (You can still go to the person or group's page to see the posts.)

The ability to unfollow gives you more control over what you see in your news feed. I recommend clearing out your news feed for not only groups, but people and pages as well. If you aren't sure how to do that, you can follow my guide:

To stop notifications for Facebook groups, here are the steps you'll need to follow:

How to turn off notifications for Facebook groups on iPhone and iPad

  1. Launch the Facebook app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on More in the bottom navigation.
  3. Tap on Account Settings — it's towards the bottom.
  4. Tap on Notifications.

  5. Tap on Group Posts.
  6. Tap on the group name you'd like to edit notifications for.
  7. Tap Off in both categories.

If push notifications stop but you still end up seeing updates in your notifications section, you'll need to unfollow that particular Facebook group, as previously mentioned.
