Nothing as long as you keep the computer you are connecting to a public network with secure there should be nop problems.

 

I use public wifi all the time and never had any problems.

The issue lies in the fact that you are connected to a network with unknown clients. Being on the same network, those clients have a certain amount of access to your computer. The level of access is varied by machine and security steps taken by the owner. Are most people sitting in a coffee house elite hackers waiting to prey on your machine? Probably not but it only takes one to pass some weird infection to your machine and steal your data.

Another reason to be careful.
