mikehende Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 This unit got the Mandiant USA Security virus and tried running a system restore which worked but the owner has forgotten the old password and now I need to undo the system restore to be able to get back into windows to try something eles. Even before running the system restore, I couldn't get into any options at startup by pressing f8 or f11, any ideas please? Quote
mikehende Posted February 12, 2015 Author Posted February 12, 2015 It's ok guys, I got help on another forum, this is what I used to get into Advanced options, just wanted to share with you guys here if you were not aware of it: Sometimes you can force Windows into the Advanced Options mode by doing the following. When Windows 8 shuts down it does not really shut down like WIndows 7. It is more of a hybrid shutdown. Getting into Advanced Options should let you undo the restore point. See link above. Hold the Power Button for 5 seconds or until the computer completely shuts off. Press the Power Button to turn the computer on. As soon as you see the rotating loading circle, press and hold the Power Button until the computer shuts off. Repeat this process 2 or 3 times until you see the Preparing Automatic Repair screen. donetao Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 Hi @mikehende Good info. You can also get into the system recover mode with a system repair CD. This is different than the restore media and might be a CD you would want to have handy. System recovery and recovery disk options The options for system recovery and making recovery disks in Windows 8 are a little different than in previous versions of Windows. If you want to make a recovery disk, go to create a USB recovery drive (you can also create your recovery drive on a CD or DVD), which can help you troubleshoot problems with your PC, even if it won't start. If you're having problems with your PC, you can try to restore, refresh, or reset it. Need more help? See all support pages for repair & recovery. Ask a question in the community forums. mikehende Posted February 13, 2015 Author Posted February 13, 2015 Thanks for the info but I am not sure any disk would have helped in this situation since I had tried Hitman Pro on USB and Parted Magic on CD, simply put no external media was booting which was why my only option was to get into Advanced menu. You would have to have the boot menu set to boot from from DVD/CD or USB . I have my boot menu set to boot from DVD/CD as the first option. Quote Some times you're the wind shield. Rich-M Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 Mike, for $20 you can get all kinds of password recovery disks that allow you to remove the password from Windows and even though you are part time in this, you still should have one of these. Quote
