Guest John Callaham Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 If you got a new smartphone or tablet for Christmas, the chances are good that it was an iPhone or an iPad made by Apple. A new report claims that 51.3% of all new smartphone and tablets activated worldwide between December 19-25 were from the team in Cupertino. The report comes from Flurry, which got its information based on the over 600,000 apps that it tracks with its analytics services. Samsung came in a distant second in new device activations with 17.7% and Microsoft's Lumia phones were third with 5.8%. Flurry added: The App Industry continued with its tradition of witnessing the largest numbers of App Installs on Christmas Day. With a new device, we're all likely to turn into install addicts. This year, and on Christmas Day in the US, Flurry tracked 2.5x the number of app installs as compared to an average day in the first three weeks of December. This is a remarkable number considering the maturity of the US market and the difficulty of getting recognized in crowded app stores. Perhaps unsurprisingly, games and messaging apps saw the highest increase in app installs on Christmas Day as we sought entertainment and connection with friends and family. The number of phablets that were activated last week also increased, thanks in part to sales of the 5.5 inch iPhone 6 Plus. Flurry's data indicated that 13% of all new mobile devices were in the phablet category during Christmas week, compared to just 4% from the same period a year ago. Source: Flurry Continue reading...
