Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines are equipping their pilots with Surface Pro 3 to make flight operations even more efficient, it was announced Wednesday.

Lufthansa has purchased more than 5,000 Surface Pro 3 devices for pilots. Device rollout to pilots worldwide will be in February and March 2015 to pilots in all regions where Lufthansa flies.

Austrian Airlines has already begun rolling out Surface Pro 3 to their pilots for use as Electronic Flight Bags, replacing heavy paper-based flight kits containing navigational charts and aircraft reference materials. With 650 devices already deployed, Austrian Airlines expects to issue up to nearly 1,000 Surface Pro 3 devices by the end of the year.

As you may know, Delta Air Lines previously adopted Surface for its pilots. “As with Delta Air Lines, Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines will leverage Surface Pro 3 with applications built for the Windows 8.1 platform,” writes Cyril Belikoff, Surface senior director, in a blog post. “Industry-leading interactive software gives flight crews the tools and resources they need in flight, such as quick and efficient access to real-time information such as weather reports, dynamic charts and navigation utilities.”
