Posted November 6, 201410 yr I have a Dell All-in-One 2030 with Windows 8.1 and lately I have been finding the bootup taking longer and longer with occasional freezes and began to think I have a hard drive problem. The unit has a 1Tb Seagate 7200 RPM hard drive which I replaced with a 240 gb Ssd drive only the drive only shows about 120 Gb. I have looked in Disk Management and Easeus Partition Manager and I cannot see any unallocated space. The drive is setup as a GPT drive and this one has me really puzzled. The speed is absolutely awesome but where did my 100 gb go? Anyone with any ideas?
November 6, 201410 yr FPCH Admin Have you tried to boot with a Linux disk and use the partition tools to check the drive. I have had this happen and the missing partition was a ReiserFS partition. I don't know how it was created and it was only visible in Linux. I removed it and left it was unallocated space. Then I was able to create a new partition in Windows. November 6, 201410 yr Author Great thought Bob I will try that with GParted tonight. You triggered a memory when I restored the drive in Macrium I could swear I saw a 97 Gb partition and a 120 Gb partition which I thought was odd but I assumed I would see both when I was done and then forgot about that, I will try that tonight. November 7, 201410 yr Agreed with Bob about GParted I don't leave home without a Linux Live CD in my bag. Not just for hidden partitions but for saving data on a customers borked HDD, but also to check network speeds, and file integrity, and restore deleted data. Or, sometimes to install Linux on a customers PC that has plenty of HDD room to give them a taste of something other than windows if they are already somewhat tech savvy or tech "hungry", hence I usually carry both and older version of a live CD distro, and a newer version of Ubuntu or Mint.
November 7, 201410 yr Author I have always used that one....this is getting more interesting by the minute. I went in with GParted and there is no other partition. The other thing that is screwy about all this is the disk is a San Disk yet it shows as a Samsung and I can see where that is a possibility except I had a Samsung 128 Ssd drive I can't find now that was originally in the holder I used to place the Ssd in the All-in-One. Of course I have looked everywhere for the San Disk drive and cannot find that either....can't help but wonder if my German didn't play games with me and ran off with the new drive and I accidentally installed the old one? While she never does things like that yesterday she chewed up the paint brushes the handyman who is doing some painting for me as I found them under the dining room table along with a roller tray and roller and a pile of chewed sand paper. She has never done stuff like that either but I have been so busy and haven't spent much time with her lately!
November 7, 201410 yr You need to spend more time with your German, Rich. Computers will be around forever but your German won't be. November 8, 201410 yr Author One thing I do though few people do is I take the big one to a dog park every weekend (she has guard duty to perform as she protects the weak and shy dogs from the more aggressive ones)....and to do so I travel a minimum 45 minutes but depending on where I go I have gone up to 1 1/2 hours Dougie. I have come to believe socialization among dogs, could be one of the single most important part of their development.
December 1, 20149 yr Author Well I finally solved it and feel pretty stupid.....I finally found the time to open up the unit and the mount for the ssd drive contained the Samsung 128 gb drive and the 240 gb San Disk drive and the Samsung drive was the one plugged in holding the OS. So easy remedy, egg on face and its over! Interesting enough this drive is brand new and as well as the 2 yr old Samsung drive improved the speed of the unit, it is noticeably faster now.
December 1, 20149 yr FPCH Admin Well, that explains that! :ouch: ~I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.~ ~~Robert McCloskey~~
