I really dislike the windows 7 sound recorder. Is there a means of installing the windows xp sound recorder into windows 7?

Do you have access to an XP machine? If you do, you would copy the (sndrec32.exe) file over to your Windows 7 machine. There's some debate as to whether it will actually work or not. If you are going to try it, I suggest you make a restore point first. (Just in case.)

I'm coming in a bit late so apologies. There are a number of free sound recording programs which you may well prefer to the Windows 7 default. One of the best is 'Audacity' but you may not need all of its facilities for basic sound recording. A simpler program is 'Free Audio Recorder 6.6.7'. Both are available from Softpedia, a download centre I have found reliable and trouble free (no hidden unwanted extras included). 'Free Audio Recorder' can be found at http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Audio/Audio-Editors-Recorders/Free-Audio-Recorder-Accmeware.shtml and 'Audacity' at http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Audio/Audio-Editors-Recorders/Audacity.shtml. You will find these at other download centres too, so if you have a preferred site, take a look.

I tried different versions of "free sound recorder" from softpedia & MalwareBytes or Nod32 gave me a warning that it is malware. I did find a site/url that allowed me to download windows xp sound recorder onto my windows 7 machine. I only use sound recorder programs to test my various microphones. I did find that i could download windows xp sound recorder a multiple of times onto my desktop Thank you for your suggestions. Edited by N3

I don't trust that site and there are enough bad things there lurking N3 even though there may be legitimate programs available also. You just have to be very careful there and I would suggest not using it. See if any of those programs are available at File Hippo or Major Geeks, those sites are ok.

Rich........The sound recorder i'm using is an "MS Windows" program. Also there are sound recorders from Major Geeks that malwarebytes or nod32 recommend i do not open! Even Major Geeks is questionable. I haven't had any problems with "File Hippo".

Apologies regarding 'Free Audio Recorder' from the Softpedia site. I have never before had problems with that site, not one PUP ended up on my system let alone anything worse - however those with malevolent intentions are getting more clever at deceiving even the most respected hosting sites. It looks like Softpedia, like so many other previously respected download sites is slipping. I'll certainly heed Rich's advice.

It is possible that the problem was a false positive but it is not worth taking risks - I downloaded the zipped installer file for the program and ran Malwarebytes and Avast scans of the file that revealed no problems but Comodo Firewall alerted me to a problem as soon as I tested the unzipped installer. I allowed Comodo to block and quarantine the reported file and cleared the installer from my system which I willnow scan.

N3, if you haven't already tried Audacity, it may be worth a go.

Kick........Audacity is too busy for me. The windows xp sound recorder on my windows 7 machine is simple & direct for my application.

Fair enough N3 - I guess you've used Audacity before so know how comprehensive it is; there is such a lot in in what is, after all, a free program.

Best regards, Kick.

I think there's a pretty fair learning curve with Audacity.

That being said, my son swears by it.
