Is there a list of "safe program download sites"? I tried downloading a "free voice recorder" program from "Major Geeks" & received a malware warning!

I always try to download straight from the programmer's website when possible.

It all depends on what program gave this message and how that program is set up.

If the security program is set to check for PuP's then it may be that a third party program was detected.

A lot of free downloads do contain these.

It doesn't always mean the program is infected with malware.... just that the third party software is included in the download.

That said.... the download may be infected. (anything is possible these days )

Try downloading from another source to see if you still get the same message.

N3 Major Geeks is one considered to be safe and the other is File Hippo. I agree with Cindy and while we should always try to use the actual mfgr website, many of them use third party download sites for free versions so there isn't much you can do about that. The truth is you have to be careful wherever you go.
